Xbox 360 graphics

You don't need a HDTV though. Just get a VGA cable (~£15) and hook it up to your pc monitor, bang there you go HDTV quality without the cost.

I am slightly confused with your comment on COD2  . Yes it looks better on the pc (well it does on mine at least) but the gameplay / playability is identical. (I have it on both systems)

But to look its best, the 360 needs a HDTV (and remember that there are currently 3 differing stds of HDTV) and when run on a normal TV looks less attractive than at1600x1200 on a CRT or decent TFT monitor.
For me COD2 just felt less accurate (probably the mouse Vs controller thing) and less playable, not sure why but it did for me.

FPS do not work for me with a controller.

And the comparison between the two is not really helpful IMO.

MY PC is my multimedia HUB.

I have:

A terabyte of storage for my entire CD collection.
A full office suite for all my email, admin, office tasks,etc..
A CD/DVD Burner for collections for the car/backups etc..
XFI sound card for high quality music playback. My pc is my Hifi
High quality Gaming and cheaper titles.
Full HD video editing suite. So I can master all photography and digital film clips.
DVD authoring for professional DVD creation
Photoshop

I mean the list goes on.

Not only can I play games at higher quality than xbox i can do everything else from one machine.

I bet people with xbox's also have pc's too.So the price arguement is not really a valid one.

£280 gets you an xbox but really what else can you do with it? watch films?
listen to music from that diddy hdd?

HDTV this inflates the price beyond pc.

This same money gets you a high end card for your pc and allows you to do all matter of things.

There really is no comparison.

Is there a card on the market that comes clost to the 360 graphics?

Of course.

If you have the money to buy a very high end PC, then the xbox360 is already outdated. Something like an FX-60 with 7900GTX/x1900XTX in SLI/crossfire and 2gig of quality RAM, connected to high end display will look better than xb360, if nothing else than due to the fact that you can use higher resolution, AA and AF.

The real question is of course, whether you are willing to spend that kind of money on a PC. The xbox360 represents very good value for money, but in terms of pure quality it can't compete with a high end custom PC.

Would the x360s cpu which has triple-core design running at 3.2 be faster than the fx60 because thats only duel core at 2.6?

My dual core opteron at 2.8ghz is faster than an xbox.

so there lies your answer .

The xbox is already outdated imo.

as far as i know the xBox 360's triple core CPU isn't a multipurpose CPU. Unlike the FX-60. So i don't thnik you can compare the both of them.

I've no idea how the xbox architecture compares clock-for-clock to A64, but it's a bit of a moot point anyway. This thread is about the graphics, and the xbox360 is extremely limited in terms of the available resolution/AA/AF settings compared to a PC. Stick a PC above 1600x1200 with AA/AF cranked up and the 360 simply won't look as good.

You do not need a HDTV at all to get access to the higher resolutions. Your current PC monitor with a 360 VGA cable will give you access to the higher resolutions (1024 x 768 up to 1280 x 1024 on a 4:3 monitor). There are a fair few 19" widescreen TFT's such as the Acer for under £200 which will give you access to the same HD resolutions as an HDTV would, namely 720p (1280 x 720, 1280 x 768, 1360 x 768). The 360 will look just as good on the TFT widescreen as it would on a HDTV. There are plenty of people using widescreen monitors for the 360 instead of a HDTV.

In these type of arguments people always use the PC's higher resolution as its trump card, but how many average gaming machines can play modern games at resolutions higher than 1280 x 1024 without effecting the frame rate. Not everyone has PC's as good as the bulk of us on these boards will have. So the difference in resolution between the 360 and an average gaming machine isnt all that great.

I think you are missing one fundamental point here.

You can do so much more with your money with a pc.
you can edit,encode,backup,burn dvd's,surf,email,etc.......

and game.

750 with the xbox and HDTV get you what.

games and films thats it so your statement xbox> PC value is not really valid.

as for just abit more outlay I can do hundreds of things rather than two. ;)

and have better gamng performance than xbox into the bargain.

oh and a few words I missed

PC IS UPGRADABLE

I can modify and change components to keep me up to date.

you get what your given with xbox and in 12 months it will be old hat.

It always seems in these arguments its an either or, 360 against PC. For some strange reason its never considered that people will own both. When people buy a 360, their PC doesnt automatically disappear. Its still there and useable for everything it used to be. People may just decide not to spend loads of money on upgrading to play the latest games. Will adding a new £350 graphics card make any difference to what the PC can do apart from playuing games ?

You buy an XBox 360 for playing games, what else would you do with it  Its a games console, i certainly didnt buy it with the intention of using it for anything else.

You'd use your PC to do all your office work, encoding etc. You may choose to no longer use it for games, or at least not try to keep up with the hardware race.

im not arguing as to which one is better all im saying is that the 360 is better value.

i own a pc and i do game on it more.. but i also own a 360. the fact of the matter is a console is NOT designed to compete with the pc. its designed to play games on.. and it does that exeptionally well with exeptional value. you say your pc is upgradable.. big whoop so are all pcs. consoles are designed to last 5 or so years.. independant from pcs. you dont need to upgrade a console so you save lots and lots of money there as well.. 360 is better value as a gaming machine but tbh, its not been made to be a rival for pcs as they taylor to totally different markets of gamers. so theres no actual point in comparing to two.

You can replace one games console with another for roughly the same cost as a top-end upgrade of one component in a PC. Of course, you then get a compatibility issue, unless your new console will play all the games from your old console.

Apples and pears, really. If you want something solely to play games on that does that one task only but does it very simply (no drivers, no patches), very well and fairly cheaply (assuming you already have a suitable display), then a games console is the best bet because it's specialised for that one task and it's sold at a loss. If you want a multi-purpose, upgradeable computer with more games, more customisation of games, better sound, better graphics, cheaper games, plus all the plethora of things a PC can do and a games console can't do, then a PC is the best bet.
