Just a quick question.

If I was proposing having a 360 in the same room as my PC, to connect to XBOX live, would it be necessary to unplug the modem cable from the PC to place in the USB on the '360, or is there some form of splitter that's available to undertake this task?

Thanks :p

USB modems will not work on the 360. You've either got to pass the 360 through your PC and have internet connection sharing enabled, or get a USB modem router.

buy a network card? Leave modem connected to pc and link ya pc and 360.

Ive got a wireless PCI card in mine and a network card, got the net from downstairs and linked it to 360 in my room :)

Dont u get a CAT5 cable with the premium pack?

The Broadband connection is in the same room as the PC so just want the cheapest option viable.
A regular (as in not wireless) network card is the cheapest option.

DOes your PC have a network card. If so, buy a crossover LAN cable and connect it between the xbox and the PC and then enable Internet Connection Sharing on the PC. The only downside to this is the PC needs to be switched on for the xbox to connect to live.

The other option would be to buy an Ethernet router for about £40 and plug both your PC and xbox into it.

ADSL routers are so cheap now I'd just get one of those mate. Will give you more flexibility in the long run too, allowing you to attach further PC's laptops or storage to your network.

Something like the netgear 834g would be ideal, and only about 50ish. The 360 will plus straight into it

Ok, I'm kinda lost!

I've just looked at my PC, and in fact I have a wire from my modem which goes into my PC - not in the USB port, but as a larger "phone-line type connection" [good terminology huh!].

Does this amend any suggestions?

That sounds like an ethernet modem.

Does the cable look a bit like this?

If so you should be able to just take the cable from the back of your PC and plug it into the xbox. Obviously then you couldn't access the net when using the xbox.

If you want them both connected you need an ethernet router like the Linksys BEFSR41 (in the networking section of OCUK).h

I would definately go the Router route, or at the very least a switch.

Your options are:

ICS (internet connection sharing)
Router

Best option is the Router, as you can then plug other components into the Router (e.g another pc, a laptop) and have them on all at the same time. Make sure you get a decent make though !

ICS is the cheapest, as all you need is a £3 network card. You take the network card and install it into your PC. Which means taking the side off whilst the PC is turned off and plugging a "card" into it. Quite easy. You then just need a network cable running from the newly installed card, into your xbox. With a setting enabled on the PC that is ICS. Your PC will need to be on at the same time that you want to go on xbox live though which is the only drawback.

Any thing else which is needed just ask.

Well if it is an ethernet connection (if it isn't USB I don't see what else it would be) then you should be able to just plug it into the Xbox and that way you don't need to buy anything. Unless you need to be able to use the internet on the PC at the same time.

With a switch no, as it will have 4 ports which that cable plugs into.

You will need another cable though, just plug the pc and xbox into the switch. Should be ok then.

If I use an Ethernet switch, does the PC have to be on simultaneously with the XB, or can they run independently?

Thanks
With a switch the PC would have to be on. But if you are going to spend money, what you want is a router. You would plug your modem's ethernet cable into the router and that would share it with both the 360 and the PC, rather than the PC sharing.
