We’ve just released a system update for the Xbox 360 over Xbox LIVE.

As previously announced, this system update contains support for USB Memory storage devices.

Sometime over the next few hours when you sign in to Xbox LIVE you’ll receive a prompt to accept this mandatory update. If you are signed into LIVE already, you may be signed out and asked to accept the update and you’ll be back online in a few moments.

Post your comments here, or drop by the Xbox forums to share your experience with this new feature.

woop woop! Finally got a use for that pile of memory sticks laying around the house...

Think Its a bit poor that your limited to a maximum of 32Gig! (I might be wrong) & 16 gig being the biggest stick you can use?

I don't think its 32gig, just 16 gb per stick... the 360 has 3 usb ports, although I don't know if the back one can be used for anything but the wireless unit.

The back one is just a USB port, can be used for anything like the front two, and of course you can use a hub to add more I think.

Since i've got a 60GB drive and about 4 games i personally rate for the 360 i don't really need extra storage. What i am curious about however is can i backup my savegames to an external datastick in case my hard drive fails?

That is the intention I believe, as well as being able to migrate the data around as you need it. Also, easy transportation to other peoples xboxs I'd imagine.

I got dumped out BC2 for this less than 10 tickets from a defensive victory on Laguna Presa.

That would indeed be useful, my only worry though is that you can only migrate, not copy. I'm just as likely to lose my data stick as i am for my HDD to fail etc so only having one copy of my saves makes me... uneasy.

No, I don't think the intention is migration, this is not a replacement to the HDD transfer utilities. The whole point is that the USB stick acts as a storage facility that is accessible via the normal memory access area in the options, as well as storage for games while they're running. You should simply be able to copy from one device to the other, like you could with the memory cards.

Well this is interesting!
I have saved my old 20Gb HDD, so I've plugged it into the Xbox via an Transfer Cable and its now configured itself as 16Gb of storage.
I'll test that I can actually transfer data to and from it shortly.
