** Xbox 360 System Update – USB Memory Support released! **

good if you got lots lying around, but the cheapest 16gb usb stick i can find is just under £20, i picked up a second hand 60gb 360 hdd for £38 at gamestation which was more what i needed.

the limited cap on the usb is a pain. :(

I do wish that they didn't have the limit on storage, as a 360 with external USB HDD would be very useful. I'd possibly trade in my super elite for the rumoured slim model if we could use the entire drive!

Slim will most likely come with a built in 250GB hard drive.

Does the USB stick need formatting to some ridiculous secure format by Microsoft or something? Like when you first put it in your Xbox and attempt to put a save on it or whatever, will it be formatted automatically?

Edit - Yes it does. Will test on the PC now.

Edit 2 - Still works on PC. All files appear as Data0012 etc, etc.

You need to format it on the 360 itself to be usable i think.

NTFS supported or FAT32 only?

Think the 360 uses a creepy mix of NTFS and FAT32, don't think its either or, not 100% though. Although again, it needs to be formatted on the 360 to be usable.

Pleased with this update, should come in very useful. What I'm curious about though, is there any chance certain unscrupulous individuals could use this feature for save game hacking/achievement cheating etc or have MS implemented any kind of encryption on data that is transfered to the usb device? I'm not hinting at piracy talk in anyway, just curious about the theoretical side of this update, although I suppose such things could have been done before with dodgy HDDs...

Well this is interesting!
I have saved my old 20Gb HDD, so I've plugged it into the Xbox via an Transfer Cable and its now configured itself as 16Gb of storage.
I'll test that I can actually transfer data to and from it shortly.

Genius!! i knew there was some reason i kept those items.

Heh. Ironically, that's more storage than you get with a 20GB drive, thanks to all the space they reserve for system junk!

Save/achievement hacking already goes on but they can be caught out, like those people that manage to unlock achievements out of order or obtain unobtainable ones :p

Unlikely to adhere to the performance requirements though and/or be fake.

Really dont think its that picky mate, ive tried it with a number of USB sticks ranging from Corsair to cheap chinese fake branded ones and they all work just fine. The only issue I have found with some is that they wont fit in the rear USB port, so you have to have it sticking out the front. Thats where using a super small one like the Sandisk Micro Skin comes in as it slots straight in.

This does not work, my Elite just keeps on asking me if i want to transfer all my data to the 20gb.

When i try to save or install a game it only shows the 120gb drive :-\

All I did was plug the drive in via the Transfer cable, then configured it in System Settings > Memory.
I was even playing Gears of War 2 off of it yesterday.
