**XBOX ONE** Official Thread

Devs may get lazy with the extra elbow room they have to work with now. Hope not but it could happen. They'd get sniffed out pretty quickly though I should think.

The problem with that is that it might not be all down to the developer. They might be under time or financial constraints that force them to have the game look and run the same on both consoles, as opposed to optimising as best they could.
Dont see your logic there - sticking the same code (as a massive oversimplification) will generate a 'better performing' game on the PS4 it seems - so if its a matter of time/money then how would they have that resource to either optimise the XO version or unoptimise the PS4 version. As I said a massive oversimplification, but to generate the same performance requires tinkering, so theyll spend money/time to get that parity...

I know you are more optimistic than me when it comes to developers, but seeing them play the politics PR game just doesnt make me think theyll be so platform agnostic as they should be :(

Yes, the PS4 is the more powerful console so the exact same code should (in very basic theory) run faster on it. What I mean though is that perhaps the developer will program a game to run at 1080p60FPS. This is achieved on both consoles. The Xbox One does that by running at 90% (for example) of it's power, while the PS4 does it by running at say 70% (again, just an example). The developer has hit their target of 1080p60FPS. Do they then continue to spend more time and money utilising the extra power still left available on the PS4, making it a little prettier, or will they be forced to ship the game in that state?

This is very much developer dependant, but I think we've all seen developers forced to ship a game when it's not 100% ready, and then be forced to patch it afterwards. Those same pressures could mean that games look the same not through the laziness of developers, but by the constraints of the men who hold the purse strings.

Its a fair and valid point (I didnt see it like that when you first said it), still your example is probably a developer/publisher/game Id probably pass over 9 times out of 10. Im just not interested in lining such pockets anymore, games like TLoU and GTA5 remind me to keep adopting that approach...

Unfortunately I think it's how it will be near the start of the console life cycle, if only until the developers start to fully appreciate the power of both consoles and how to use them.

That's of course still assuming that the large PS4 power advantage (spec wise) turns into a big advantage in the real world as well. It might not be as big as people think, in which case that's probably even less incentive for developers to try and make one version better than the other. Again, it's just idle speculation for now. We'll know more over the next 6-12 months I think.

Think Ive assumed both are going to be as hard as a developing a PC game (or as close to it) compared to previous generations - perhaps thats naive of me.

I think we should end the whole development comparison as I dont think we agree that much with each other and no doubt its a pointless conversation til the games are out. I just thought given the same resources on each platform the outcome would be unlikely to be identical...

You could well be right on that, I really have no idea. I'm just giving my opinion on why things might look (nearly) identical on both systems to start. I have no doubt that the developers will make use of the extra power of the PS4 in time, I'm just not so sure it'll be done straight away. We've got less than 2 months to wait to find out anyway :)

Games, games, games. Nothing in the PS4 exclusive line up is really gripping me (never liked Killzone much), while I am a huge huge fan of Dead Rising and Forza. That made it a really easy decision for me. Will still get a PS4, just next year when games like inFamous are out.

hehe - same - X1 just because of Forza 5 :D

Forza 5 BF4 and fifa14 which comes free with day one release for me, I'm looking forward to playing them all :D
Probably play forza more than the others tho ;)

I get back to the UK after 6 months in the Falklands a week before the Xbox One is released. That'll be enough time to get nicely excited!

Haven't really been following tis thread, but has this come up yet, and do you think its as simple as they make out.

“. Furthermore, if anyone develops a game for Windows 8, they can take that game with almost the exact same code, to the Xbox One. It’s up to the developer if they want to or not.
When asked the follow-up question if a developer could really create something for Windows 8 and get it running on Xbox One using almost the same code, Isogai responded, “Yeah, almost the same code.”

And is this proper games, or just games designed for metro?

I'd say yes as it's the whole idea behind Microsoft Visual Studio and DirectX that your games run on any system that supports those libraries. Note "run" and not "run well". :p The game will be far from optimised for the Xbone though as it won't be using that ESRAM without code changes I should imagine.
