On the same count you cant say its a made up number used to massage the differences, its not a guess if its been used as it was in the last few posts. I think to quantify it further than that will just lead to nit-picking, to me as theres been a need to resolution drop the performance difference is going to be more than just noticeable.

I never said it was a made up number :confused:
 
The reality is, no amount of driver optimisation what the media seems to think the XB1 will need to do is going to bridge the gap from the below hardware differences. This isn't even taking into account the better RAM implementation.

Xbone: 1.18 TF GPU (12 CUs) for games
Xbone: 768 Shaders
Xbone: 48 Texture units
Xbone: 16 ROPS
Xbone: 2 ACE/ 16 queues

PS4: 1.84TF GPU ( 18 CUs) for games + 56%
PS4: 1152 Shaders +50%
PS4: 72 Texture units +50%
PS4: 32 ROPS + 100%
PS4: 8 ACE/64 queues +300%
That is quite a substantial difference between the two of them.
 
I know, but my original point was in reply to someone here thinking it was a 'magical number'

Assume you mean me as I said it is a mythical number. Maybe it was a bad choice of words on my part, I simply meant people raise that the "PS4 is 50% more powerful" when in reality it is more the "PS4 is more powerful by maybe about 50% ish" There is no formula to work out from the pure specs of flops, CU, RAM etc or even the resolution of games to how much more powerful the PS4 is.

Don't get me wrong though I am in no way trying to say the gap is insignificant just that we can't put a specific figure on it as some people claim. Nevermind the actual difference it will cause in games in the future.

Actually, we can say from a technical point of view what the difference is (as highlighted above). The real world difference is what really can't be quantified as that will come down to so many factors.
 
We all know that the PS4 has the better specs on paper but how about people actually play the consoles first and then they can talk about which one is better etc...

I don't get why we have to see the same arguments over and over.
 
Seriously guys, why keep going on about what's more powerful, what's got the best games, etc? It's the most boring thing about this thread by far. At the end of the day everyone will make their own decision which console to get, it's like people are trying to justify their choices to themselves by ramming certain bits of info (PS4 more powerful, Xbox One better games) down other people's throats.

By nature we'll take it all on board then decide which one suits us best for ourselves. If the PS4 being more powerful swings it for you, great. If you really want to play the Xbox One exclusives, equally great.

For me, I can't live without having the exclusives on either - so it was an easy one for me :p
 
It's not the first time Sony have given it big licks with their hardware spec that developers then spent years trying to work out how to use properly. Having said that, the use of x86 PC chips is going to probably narrow that gap.

Quite how useable all these multiple cores are, and the developers ability to utilise them all properly, will be the real measure here. The underlying software will be key.

I very much doubt a load of keyboard warriors comparing numbers side by side in a table, have a better grasp of the hardware and how well the systems will stack up ... than billion dollar companies do. Remember they all buy their stuff from the same manufacturer pretty much.

Because they want to beat down on people, they have now got a persecution complex and they are reveling in the fact the Sony console is performing better after all these years of having ****e ports.

Personally I feel sorry for the poor people who can't afford both and have to act like idiots because they haven't got a decent enough job to be able to enjoy their hobby fully.

The strange thing is that the 360 had EDRAM, which is a very similar setup to what the One has, so you'd think that developers would be able to use the ESRAM fairly easily. It seems it's not that straightforward though.

They probably can, it's just being made the scapegoat for the 720P v 1080P arguments rather than the huge elephant in the room (the GPU).

The fact is ESRAM is just there to boost the DDR3 bandwidth, it simply can't change the fact that the Xbox GPU only has half the pixel fill rate of PS4's GPU.

Not denying the PS4 is more powerful, nor am I denying the theoretical 50% more GPU power. I still believe that when developers get to grips with both consoles, it won't be anywhere near a 50% real world difference (my guess is more like a 15-20% difference).

It's very likely to stay as things are, with PS4's extra GPU grunt being used simply to increase resolution.

It would actually be interesting to know how many people posting in these two threads (Xbox One/PS4) have owned or currently own both PS3 and Xbox 360. Because if the vast majority do, then these arguments really are totally pointless. :p
 
Then it makes less sense, for all the extra "power" the PS4 has, the lack of all the UI stuff etc, where the hell is all that power then?...why isnt BF4 running native 1080p with all the bells and whistles at max settings? etc.
I havnt seen one first party game from them that's made me see a MASSIVE difference to warrent all the extra power they keep talking of.
 
I really do not think you can judge a console's performance on a few half arsed multi platform releases. It will be well into next year before we see some great games on both systems.
