Evening folks,

I'm looking at getting a new phone soon, preferably a smartphone of some sort. Having used Symbian for ages until my 7610 died, I'd like a phone with PDA capabilities, 3G and wifi.

The phone that appeals to me at present is the MDA Pro with web 'n' walk from T-Mobile. Does anyone have any experiences of this phone, good or bad?

I've noticed that it's biiiiiiig, even heavier than the classic 9210 that I've had experience with.
I'm not going to be using it for business at all, I just want a geeky phone that's got full internet access and the option to install apps. I've used Windows Mobile in the past on the original SPV, found it a bit buggy, has it got any better.

Finally, are there any other options for PDA phones that have 3G and wifi?

Cheers,

al

I have one being delivered this week, i can report back then. Personally i don't expect to keep it, but it came with my contract, and i wanna play first see what its like then ebay it. I'm after the HTC Prophet really.

The Prophet looks quite sweet, but it doesn't seem to be 3G unfortunately. That's a major concern for me if I'm going to be caning it for downloads. Let us know what it's like anyway.

thanks,

Lack of 3g is bad, but it looks awesome and is so much smaller, which clinches it for me. But i'll have a little play around with my MDA pro and get back to you by the end of the week hopefully :).

I did have the exec model from o2 a few weeks ago and to be honest its a lovely unit with 3G and built in WIFI. But fact of the matter is that it was too much overkill for me and it was also a tad too big. Plus phone wise it wasnt the best, it was ok but i couldnt get to grips with it. As a pda type machine it works brilliantly though.

Sent it back and now waiting for the p990 and the nokia n80 to be released as they will both do everything i want it to plus more and the overriding factor for me is that they are much more smaller than the exec.

Right, I managed to play with one today in the oragne shop, it's actually smaller than i thought, but still big! For a PDA it's pretty small, i can't imagine actually calling on it though. But it was very quick, and the buttons all feel tactile etc... Gorgeous phone, i'm partially debating whether i should keep it or not when i get it now! :o

Although to be fair i saw the m600 (the prophet) and that is still sexier, it's tiiiiiiny, and thats what i really want. I'll give a better review when i actually have one to play with myself :D

You be caning web n walk for downloads unless u get the pro version as the standard package is for browsing and emails from your handset and nothing else or you get throttled and a nasty letter/phone call....

If you check here.....i have the mda pro.........

Do they permit any sort of downloads? Similarly, can I login remotely to my home PC without them going a bit mad?

What are the download speeds like? Comparable to old-skool broadband?

You can look here as well

http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=17563916

yes you can login in to home pc as use the built in terminal services so do i use orb.....but only for pictures.........and logmein.....

Browsing is quick enough but not like old skool broadband more like a fast dial up or a slow broadband.......but remember even when using wireless on my pda and it can only load web pages as fast it can handle the data........when im connected to my home lan which is on a 10mb connection its the same speed as if its using 3g

Firmware updates may speed this up,i dont know

I have the Prophet (Dopod 818 Pro) and it is a great device. The best blend of form and function yet, as far as I can see. It's not without its niggles, but show me a device that is.
I have been running mine for about 3 months now and I love it.

im loving my MDA pro I got last week its great for surfing the net when sitting in bed and at work on lunch breaks

I reckon they are brilliant, its just the size of it when it rings in public........But believe it or not most of my phone calls are made at home..........And only texts and emails are dealth with when im out and about........or MSN meseenge!

There a great toy if your based in a office and go out and about in a car from site to site but certainly no good for a yuppie..........One of my mates took the pee out of it but then i pointed out to him that he had a work mobile.....his mobile....and a blackberry......sod that! 3 phones rather than 1 slightly chunkier and far more powerful!

i have both a xda mini s and an exec. exec is for work use. better with bigger screen with all the emails and other bits that i need and the other is personal that does other things i want. only thing it has a slower cpu in it but its fine.

Id still stick with the mini as it fits in my pocket a lot easier than the exec and much lighter if i was going to choose one.
