Xenoblade Chronicles X

Finally got around to starting this last night after finishing Fallout 4 and loving it so far, the environments are stunning!

The sheer amount of stats/data is a touch overwhelming and I am quite glad I played the previous game because there was no explanation at all (unless I skipped it?) about Arts, Skills, Classes or even basics like equipping gear or saving your game.

Umm that is still electronic, my point was that at least the basics should be included without needing to either print an online manual or read pages in the electronic manual. I've played the previous game extensively so I'm getting by without but for someone new to the series I don't think it would hurt to give at least some pointers.

It wasn't intended as a huge criticism, just something I think would help newcomers :)

The lack of guidance in game early on is the only real criticism I have with XBC-X. There is so much to take in that a basic tutorial introducing Arts, Soul voices, Skills, Gear (specifically what half the stats actually mean) and classes would have been very welcome.

In a weird way though I feel that the lack of guidance is also why I enjoy the game so much (I am 40+ hours in and still have so much to learn/refine). It doesn't hold your hand or give you anything on a plate thus there really is a sense of accomplishment which can often go amiss in modern games.

Started on a new Class for my character recently and discovered something...

Once you reach rank 10 on a advanced class (final class in a branch of the class tree), you 'master' that classes weapons.

This means that you can switch to any other class and still use the weapons & arts from the mastered class!.

You can mix and match weapons and arts from different classes this way, so there's a huge amount of possibilities for hybrid builds and it makes leveling up other classes much easier and more fun.

I'm still exploring - still no Skell either.

Refreshing not feeling rushed - just pootling around enjoying myself :)

That is pretty cool as I would hate to have to drop back to more limited weapon / art set just to try out a different class.

Yeah, if you don't equip the new classes weapons though you don't get the arts associated with that new class. So if you want to play as the new class in any real form you'll need to switch out one or both of the mastered weapons(and the arts that come with it).

I'm currently using mastered Longsword arts from Duelist class, and Psycho Launcher arts on Blast Fencer class.

All passive 'Skills' you've acquired can also be used cross-class, which is nice :).

Once you reach rank 10 on an advanced class it's worth switching class right away or else the class points earned from killing things will just be wasted.
The only thing you really lose by switching from a mastered class is the class-specific bonuses, but these aren't too significant and all classes have bonuses anyway.

Ok so say I switch to the Blast Fencer class (example) from my current mastered Duelist class I won't get the arts from the new class until I use the weapon sets but, I will still gain class points towards that class (thus unlocking new arts - albeit not being able to use them until I switch weapon?)?

I'm happy with my current class / art setup now but it would be good to rank up the other classes to play around with them in the future.

This is likely a false rumour...

but please be true!

Yup!.

When you switch it'll automatically equip the class specific placeholder weapons, so you need to equip the mastered weapons and set up the Arts again.

But you can switch things around anytime, like switch out one of the mastered weapons for one of the new classes weapons, creating a Duelist-Fencer hybrid class(i.e. with a mix of arts from both classes)! :).

Basically, Arts are tied to weapons, and classes essentially allow you to level up and master the weapons.

Well I bought a WiiU just for this game so I can certainly see myself buying a NX for its sequel.

Thanks for the tip in regard to classes. I will give that a go the next time I play the game. I am finding its quite relaxing to pick up and play for a couple of hours at a time. I have found that it isn't a game I can play when I am not in the mood (or just want to shoot stuff).

Yup good price, especially considering the number of hours you can get out of it!.

I finished the main story missions a few weeks back and still powering through side missions (normal and affinity missions).

That was me too. I was chuffed at the parkour I and stealth I could do. Got a bunch of probe sites I shouldn't have access to yet. Use the Shadowrunner TP art for Stealth, upgrade it to increase duration and you can even get mods to reduce cooldown or increase aura time. And then I ran out of things to do just over 100 hours in and had to get a Skell.

Currently at 150+ hours nearing chapter 8 and level 57 (closing in on 60) with 4 level 50 Skells. I'm frowning at how grindy the end-game is... but at least there's reward tickets for rare drops. They can easily be farmed by doing the Global Nemesis, breaking all the appendages and then escaping (or dying if you want to risk losing skell insurance), the special appendage fragments are traded for a hefty lot of reward tickets. Of course, they are otherwise useless. So many cool things and I'm amazed at how sweet some of the Alien races are. I just found out the unique way in which one race reproduces... pretty neat stuff.
