Have you actually watched the video - it answers all of your points (in a positive way)?

Yeah, as Sleepery pointed out, those questions were about UFO AI.

I'm very excited about Xenonauts, and wish it was out now. Or 6 months ago, so i could grab it on a steam sale :)

I stumped up £20 for the pre-order and played the early build that's in that video. It is VERY basic atm. The geoscape is only a UI test, ie you can build a base and look around it, play with the different screens but theres no interceptions, alien events, research etc. Every hour-ish game time you get thrown automatically into ground combat... which is very enjoyable! Very like the original x-com, if a little unfinished at the moment.

The early access forum is really good, the devs post there and are taking feedback from the testers and actually implementing some of the suggestions. So yeh it's looking very promising! I'm looking forward to the next builds to see more of the game.

Just thought I'd post an update on this as I have been following it since reading this thread the first time. There is a new pre-release build being released very soon (this weekend they hope) which is a lot more complete. Details of the new build are here. As before all pre-order customers get access to the pre-release versions. They've also knocked $10 off the pre-order price making it $19.99 (£12.50ish!) making it even more attractive!

Any more news on this? Has anyone tried the Beta releases?

Tempted to pre-order as they're an indie developer but just curious as to how it plays in its current state. :)

This post needs an update and some love! :D

I'm not sure if you can access their forums if you don't have pre-order access but I have been keeping an eye on it! I last played build v8 which was released around November time (when I posted above) but there were a couple of things that stopped me from playing it for long periods of game time. Specifically only having one ground attack map and having Aliens that wouldn't shoot at you (apart from reflex shots).

They are up to build v9 now and there have been a lot of new features implemented and bugs fixed.

* Alien bases and different alien species are now getting into the game albeit not fully finished.
* Added new tilesets
* Modding the game is now possible, albeit in a primitive manner as far as I can tell.
* Flammable objects and terrain have been implemented in the code but not in game yet. At some point it will be possible to set a field on fire and die in the resulting firestorm :D

I've not played the latest builds yet as I am waiting for the build v9.1 (this weekend!!) where they will have the first proper Alien AI in game (they will finally shoot at you!)

You can check it out on Desura.

I have been following this game, but with xcom enemy unknown coming out later this year i dont know if ill bother.

The WTF video has sold it for me and whilst the Firaxis production values are looking good this has it's place and will be at least half the price, definitely want to encourage this type of team. So preordering :)

This and £15 for Pre-order is a hell off a lot. Karbal for example was only $10, also not sure I would want to play this game untill it's released. Will keep an eye on it's progress but now xcom is being released I can see this version failing, especially at that price.

Kind of have to agree, much as I respect the amount of work they're putting into it (and the fact that they're doing it at all), Firaxis' remake just looks incredibly slick, while still keeping all the stuff that made the original so good. They must be panicking at this stage to get it out before the Firaxis one hits.

Whilst I agree the audience for this version is much smaller, it's a niche nostalgia product, the end result will be more faithful to the original game which is what many diehards want.

Firaxis's'is's remake does indeed look slick but it also has the potential to be dumbed down and already has a few issues that could be a deal breaker such as stupidly small squad sizes.

In essence, two very different games approaching the same subject from polar opposites - there's room for both.

Kickstarter for it has just gone up and is already at close to 20% of it's target.

I'd already pre-ordered it a few weeks back but fully intend to buy the Firaxis version as well. Not as if we have been deluged in quality xcom-like turn based strategy games over the past decade or so.

[Edit] Oh and there is a demo now available on the Kickstarter page.
