Xfactor viewer mentality

Got told about this US Xfactor contestant - made me chuckle (Paula Abdul's massive overreaction was brilliant)

In terms of X Factor UK, it's OK. I dip in and out. No-one has really appealed to me this year and you can just tell which stupid ridiculous acts are going to be in there (that awful Japanese woman) - they always give the worst category with the joke act to Louis Walsh, it's become his trademark now.

I work with someone who has been an American Idol judge. One of the preliminary round judges. They simply get given a criteria, can sing or can't sing and is entertaining.

The good acts are groomed and produced for the live final. Then quite a bit really is down to a manipulated tv audience as there are regulations they have to adhere to for ensuring a fair voting process.

They are now at the point where they have perfected the format for full manipulation and commercialism. After all they don't want a repeat of the fat (welsh?) girl winning again like the early days.

A friend of mine and his cousin both applied for the show a few years back. He actually described it to me as the worst day of his life!

It was a London audition and they had to stand outdoors in a huge queue for hours, it was cold and pouring with rain, they had made no attempt to try and cover the participants.

They eventually get split into smaller groups after registering and are finally sent to what you describe above, a judge who is part of the production team who then listens to them to see if they are any good. I think he said that if they like you, they give you a golden ticket or something. At that stage you then go on to face a wider part of the production team before they finally decide whether you are actually going to be part of the show at all.

People enjoy seeing every day normal people be given a chance and to do/be something they otherwise never would.

Personally I watch it for all the crap singers, I think they are hilarious. Then by the time it gets to judges houses and live shows I'm kind of addicted!

Plus, and let's be fair, there's not really much else on TV that's worth watching! Especially at the time X-Factor is on! So if you're not busy then you're stuck with it anyway! haha

You could always do something CRAZY like, y'know, not watch the TV for an hour and do something else? Or do you really feel that much of a compulsion that you have to watch the TV, regardless of whether you like what's on it?

Television for idiots. Simple as that I'm afraid.

It actually disturbs me that so many people watch this garbage religiously.

Every single aspect of it is painfully staged as well, but people can't seem to grasp that either.

Just... wow!

There are so many decent tv series out there, like The Wire and Dexter, Haven't even got around to watching them yet.

I hardly watch live TV these days, odd F1 race, MOTD, top gear, maybe news.

Firstly, I'm not a "fan" I just watch it occasionally if someone else already has it on. I like to see the bad auditions :)

I was dragged along to one of these shows in birmingham. I've never been to something like that before but I was surprised by how fake it all was. Yes I guess I'm naive.

They bring on some kind of comedian to make people laugh, he then orders you to do things like getting up or clapping and cheering. This is between auditions. They then use this footage as "live reactions" when contestants come on.
I think at one point he made a comment about how we were watching this for free and we owed it to them to do what he saying, or something along those lines. Put me off even further!

I didn't like most of the auditions I saw but the guy practically forced everyone to cheer and get up and start clapping etc. If you didn't with everyone else around you getting up you felt like a right pleb :P
I'm pretty sure most of the people in the audience were just being sheep. I managed to force myself to get up and fake cheering and clapping but for the ones I though were utterly utterly tripe I just sat there despite everyone else getting up...

Anyway, it was boring. I'll never go to an xfactor recording again even if I'm threatened/bribed!

To be honest I know a lot of people who simply don't watch tv. I rarely do. I just download documentaries/films etc.

I just don't like with the audition stage that obviously they've chosen to highlight some people that look good on camera, I know its a obvious thing to say but I'm guessing theres loads of people who are just as good but are munters.

Never watched it myself, but it seems that there are a lot of people on here that do - even though they find it 'offensive'!! Go figure!

Mary Whitehouse syndrome?!!

Then you are watching TV.
I just so happen to be watching Swansea V Stoke live from Albania but 99% of my viewing is stuff I downloaded (even X-Factor) and I'm under no illusion I'm still watching TV.
