XFX 4890 Audio over HDMI issue

Hey guys,

I recently bought an XFX 4890 from OCUK, and didn't get a dvi-hdmi adapter. I called customer service and they have sent me one they had. Its grey, has ATI and 6140063501G stamped on it (NOT Rev. A or B). It is also missing the middle pins, if that helps. I've been looking for help for the last couple of hours on how to get the audio to work on the HDMI, and I'm getting the feeling I've been sent the wrong component.

If any of you guys have XFX 4890 cards, could you check the dvi-hdmi dongle and just see if it matches mine, and therefore if I even have the right hardware for there to be audio on the HDMI.

FYI I do have the ATI HDMI output listed on my audio devices, but it is saying it is not plugged in.

I hope you can help, i'm about to give up :(

Andy

doh, teach me to read the OP properly, I have a 4850 and audio works fine via the ati adapter/hdmi, infact it was a pita as it overrides my soundcard when connected. will check mine in a bit and see if pins are missing.

have just found mine (using standard dvi via monitor atm), mine has 8 rows of 3 pins then a wide pin on the right (if looked at with the ati logo on top)

I would assume it should be the same as they are both 48*** series cards

it wud appear i have been sent the wrong one then, mine has two blocks of 3x3, and a wide pin :( i guess its one good thing that it may only be a hardware problem! time to call OCUK!

Ty for youre help G1, very muich appreciated!

I have exactly the same problem except i have a saphire 4870 which did come with a hdmi -dvi adapter and it shows as not plugged in under playback devices, my adaptor also has pins missing (not sure what code is on the adaptor) i have my pc connected to my hi-fi so it has not been such a big problem for me.

Oh, i just remembered that it used to work fine when i had vista home premium (32bit) then when i installed windows 7 home premium 64bit that is when i had the 'no sound over HDMI' problem. what operating system are you running and also what t.v. is it plugged into as i have a panasonic 50PZ80?

I have taken my off my pc and looked

Code looks like 6140063500G(could be a 6)

Pic of pins

Mine works fine on my Sammy. ( I do have to tell windows which output device I want to use each time I use the telly or soundcard)

im running windows 7 64bit, and my monitor is a samsung 2333HD. mine doesnt look like yours clairvoyant, its missing the central 6 pins on the main block. id imagine that is what is causing the problem and is why i have no sound... Couldnt get through to OCUK today, so i'll try when they open tomorrow and see if they can send me out the correct one. 3rd time lucky!

I have the 4890. I have never actually tried to get sound thro my tv as I have 5.1 surround. By the sound of a lot of post its one or the other. its connected DVI-HDMI

I assume it would be possible to have both my 5.1 and sound coming out thro tv, if I just set it up?

Also running Win7 64bit

^ That is what i get in the picture above except under ATI HDMI output it says "not plugged in" but it is as i get a picture on my tv but just no sound. as i said in my previous post it used to work fine when i was on 32bit vista but since moving to windows 7 64bit.

Hmm no clue really mine has worked fine under Vista 64 and Win7 64.

Have you tried the other DVI socket (long shot), or a different set of Cats.

Yes i have tried both dvi ports and lots of drivers/cats. I actuly just had it working by just unplugging the HDMI lead from the tv then rebooting my pc and then plugging back in the HDMI lead to the tv. It then says ati hdmi output "Ready" under the playback devices and i get sound through my tv (maybe the OP can try this). Only problem is when i reboot my pc the problem returns.

Yes, I get the same message "unplugged". I shall have to try your method later see if it works for me. I dont really need it but its nice to have everything working as it should.

Ya think this is to do with Win7 64bit? or maybe sound driver update?

well since every customer service is passing the buck to the other, i've just gone and ordered a Rev. B. adapter from XFX for £6. I hope this works it out!

thanks for your help clairvoyant, i have the same issue that it says not plugged in under the audio devices and therefore cannot select it as default. i hope the new adapter sorts it out!

You will only get stereo if you go HDMI sound to the TV. If your TV has a fibre optic output it will only output 5.1 if it is recieving the signal from a broadcast (freeview). It will not 'pass-throu' a 5.1 signal due to doulby copyright laws.

Only way to get 5.1 surround via HDMI is to get a AV amp, so it can seperate the 5.1 sound and channel it out to the speakers, and pass-throu the picture to the TV.
