Picked up a reasonably priced 3 month old XFX 8800gt from a popular aution site. When installed PC won't boot/post. All fans (processor, graphic card and case) all spinning. Hard drive doesn't access and monitor stays on standby. If I put my Galaxy 7900gs back in, everything is OK. Could this be a power problem (vantec 460w), I am currently branching off power from the hard drive supply.

Any option to give its own power ???
Thanks for the replies. Would giving it its own power (not branching from other hardware) help this problem?. Is motherboard compatability a likely problem? Would a low power supply problem cause the issues I'm currently experiancing?

PSU should power it fine, got 30a on the 12v rail, could be as your branching it off from your hard drive, i was powering my GT fine on a PSU with only 28a on the 12v rail.
Have just swapped card into PCIE x 16 slot 2. PC now boots as normal. Running 3d mark 06, card stated as 8X not 16X. Will this affect performance considering my relaqtivly slow processor? Why will it work in slot 2 at 8X but not in slot 1 at 16X?

Because both the slots are physically PCI-e x16 however the 2nd one is electrically 8x
