XFX HD4870X2 poor performance

wow never heard someone complain so much about the noise of their GPU...I have the exact same card as you and not phased one bit about the noise...and my case sits on my desk so its right in my ear...but I block it out really easily...and i have the fans on 65%. I will end up water cooling it but I am happy with it so far and have had it since Feb...I play my games rather loud too so I know I dont hear the noise much...but I hope its working fine for you now anyway :D

What? and risk the card being sent back to me? No thanks, it's going back for full refund.

I don't have time to mess round with RMA's, especially given the time many sites take with them.

Think it don't like the dual GPU. as my old 295 was pants with that game.
I tried it with me mates 275 clocked past a 285, and it was smooth as anything.
Tried the 4890, was good enough :) but i couldn't get the jaggers to go :( and plus the fan bearing went lol. i found ati a pain to setup good. but that's just me. the nvidia control panel seems a lot easyer to setup. and just seemed to stop the jaggers :) so maybe the single GPU is better overrule. i'm sure not everyone has this issue. 275 on it's way anyway :) it's good enough clocked.

Well sorry noise is a serious issue, do you remember the FX series and flak that received for it's cooler? this is worse!

This card NEEDS 3rd part cooling, it's loud and hot, the performance in games seems great but the noise and heat generated is horrible.

Impressive how compact the card is but it's at a cost thats for sure.

Typicaly the Asus 4870x2 is coming in stock tomorrow which has a kick ass no reference cooler.

Yeah I just noticed this, simalar to the artic cooler, I'll be returning the card anyway so might ask if they will exchange for the Asus, it's either that or I ask for a refund so hopefully they would accept this compremise.

Would be shame to have return to my GTX280, the X2 does offer great performance but the noise and heat is just to much.

i had problems with vantage, a restart was needed...than it was fine o.O and a few graphics tweaks it seemed to be choppy are lower resloultion than it did at higher wired I know o.O

Yup the stock X2 cooler is dire. I had the 3870X2 and it used nigh on the exact same design and it was awful.

Why i've steered clear of the 4870X2 until someone came out with a decent 3rd party cooling solution as there was no way I was putting up with the noise and heat of the crappy stock cooler.

I really don't understand hows users put up with it, at 40% fanspeed it's worse then my GTX280 at 100% and I thought that was loud.

Quite, some peoples case fans must be very noisy if they can't hear it over their case ambient noise at 40%... :|

I have mine set to 40%, idling at 42~C.

I can hear it without my headset. It's not loud or whiny, just a constant whooshing kind of noise as you would expect from a fan.
Fortunately if I'm at my computer I have my headset on, so this is not a problem for me.

If the Arctic Cooling cooler ever comes out, it's the first thing on my shopping list.

Seems most X2 users use head sets, makes sence.

But 40% is loud though, much louder then the average 120mm case fans, maybe if you are using delta fans I might understand some not saying it's loud in comparision.

Simple solution just water cool it!!!

Anyhow, I got rid of my 4870X2 as it was just sucky all around. Inconsistent fps and poor overclocking on water meant that I opted for a 285 and it's much better. I don't havce the money to watercool this new purchase yet but even at stock its far superior to the X2 in all but 3 games.

As for the noise, I am running a custom water cooled TJ07 and the GTX285 is the loudest thing in my rig although I did manually set the fan speed to 50% as the temps on air cooling are so ridiculous! My X2 on water never went above 45c on load and this 285 idles at 55!!! Just goes to show how much better water is than air...

why was the 4870x2 so bad?

I'm used to using an overclocked GTX280 and I found it a nice boost in performance in titles i've tested, X2 is faster then a GTX285.

Only place i've seen inconsistant framerates is Vantage.

O rly? Funny, some people agree with me some ppl dont. Interesting that you say your X2 is quicker. I found it to be quicker in terms of FPS but actual smoothness was much reduced due to micro stutter and inconsisten frames. The min frame rate of my 285 is much better in my opinion also not having to deal with all the strings to do with running multi gpus.

I have the fan set to 32% on my X2. It idles at 47 - 49 C. I can't hear the fan at that speed setting. Depending on the game ( I try to keep temps under load still no higher than 50C, 60 at the most) depends on how much the fan needs to be increased. Usually around 45% - 60%. So at idle mine isn't a noisey card at all, sometimes on load it is quite loud. Mine is an HIS board. They tend to have good cooling.
