XFX HD4870X2 poor performance

My 4850X2 2GB is not too bad when it comes to coolin; it sits at 3% fan speed on idle with the temps at about 40C, and I've never had it go above 35% fan speed when testing the card. I think I'll still go for a different cooler, mind. Or just take the jump for watercooling :)

I have heard that the 4870 version of mindi s a bit louder though. Makes sense with it being a lot more powerful.

Zalman sell some good little fans that can replace the fans on mine, and I've seen some awesome coolers by Arctic Cooling for the 4870 X2.

Good luck!

Chris.

To OP: Have you got AI enabled in the CCC? This has to be enabled to use both GPU's... if disabled then it will only ever use one. I had a quick read through and couldn't see anyone else mentioning this as a solution for your card seemingly only using the single core. This could also quite easily be the cause of the issues you've been getting imo.

I have mine set with two fan profiles, 35% for normal desktop daily usage where the fan is virtually silent, and 45% for gaming - fan is definitely noticeable, but with either headphones on or speakers it's not a problem at all.

Profiles are easy to setup and can be selected by Hotkey if needed for ease of switching.

if all this has already been mentioned then sorry, but like I said I only had a quick skim through. Good luck! :)

mine is set to 40% in ccc all the time and is hardly noticable....keeps my card at about 60 after 2 hrs of gaming....usually 40 at idle...so no probs here

+1

(altho to be totally fair it's sitting in an Antec900 under my desk with the case fans on high so it's hardly noticeable, all fans become less noticeable when the gaming volume gets turned up :p )

Also agree with the above post regarding AI in CCC.. It does make a difference, had me worried to start with !!
Hope u get the other issues sorted..

I hate the stock fan on my XFX 4870, if you leave it on auto it lets the card idle on 70c!, auto fan control it at 30% and it never goes above 70 under a long session of high load which is awesome though. Only thing I have noticed about the 4870 models, they do run very high, I RMA'd one back to **** to because the MEMIO temp could not be controlled, went to 120 in games :P. Only real problem I have had with ATI so far.

Using an Antec 1200 with all fans on lowest speeds, still X2 sounds horrible and runs hot.

All the performance issues were solved though, games are fine, it's just vantage thats a bit dodgy.

Sending it back though as I really don't like the card.

I really don't understand hows users put up with it, at 40% fanspeed it's worse then my GTX280 at 100% and I thought that was loud.

Mine is quiet even at 50%. But then I paid extra for a Sapphire card. I love my 4870X2 :). It is also in a Cosmos case with extra sound proofing...so perhaps that stops some of the noise too?

Well 7200 is good for the card on Xtreme. I'd say it still faulty only for having all the artifacts and glitches.

My 4870X2 scored 7184 on Xtreme.

Well there were only two glitches that bothered me, one was the huge framerate drop when the crate hits the water in the first test, the might be normal I don't know, never noticed it with my GTX280.

The other was towards the end of the second test where the lights on one of the ships where span out like landing lights in front of the ship which looked a bit odd.

Well I can put up with the noise a little while longer as I am going to watercool the GPU in the coming months. Already have the GPU block for it, now just to get rad, fittings and res/pump. :D then the noise is forever gone. :D

Well when playing games thats when your GFX cards fans making the most noise..

I simple turn my fan up 100%, so its like Roaring! which provides the best cooling possible.

Even tho the sounds bad you wont hear anything anyway beacuse your playing a game with a HEADSET, meaning it doesnt matter what % fan settings you have you shouldnt be able to hear it in game anyway.

Unless your a total spork and use speakers to play your games.

Grow up guys, hes obviously joking... Why do you take everything so seriously?

No, check his other posts. Him and a little cronie of his troll ATi threads, they do it like those born again christians rant about how everyone is evil and they're trying to save your souls from the hardships of owning non-nvidia hardware.

Bornagain nVidiots basically.

He's purposefully tried to derail threads on a few occasions.
