XIM3 round the corner (mouse and keyboard support)

Because they want the playing field to be as level as possible.

why not have 2 seperate matchmaking lobbies, one for those who want to play with pads only and the other for keyboard & mouse users?

:p That's a level playing field.

By MS making their own adapter I assume they can detect when someone is using it, automatically chuck that person in a KB&M lobby, problem solved. :D

I think it's a great idea. The main thing that puts me off the Xbox is the carpy control method for FPSs. But I take the point that this could create a major mess with the competitive element of the games.

No it isn't, that's TWO level playing fields. Ask Unreal Tournament 3 how that worked... In the end the best thing for everyone is to have one playing field. I don't want to have half my friends using pads and half using mice. If you want to use M+K then **** off to PC gaming.

Fair enough, I see what you mean but it's the only way which it would possibly work.
:)

It was also quite obviously a tongue in cheek sentence

Hence the , :)

I know a lot of people who are put off by PC gaming because they feel the learning curve of using a keyboard to game is not as simple as just picking up a control pad, which is what my comment was aimed at.

I already have mouse & keyboard for pc gaming and would probably sell my xbox if something like this took off in a big way. No interest in gaming with people who can't appreciate the fun of a level playing field (ping/lag aside).

If this works as well as has been said, then it's ideal for me, and others like me. People that game on the pc and console, but avoid fps/shooters(wouldn't touch it with a ten foot pole in most cases) on the consoles. All our competitive fps gaming is done on the pc, and this would just open up the few console fps games we would want for the single player. I've certainly no interest in playing fps online via a console, but there is always one or two games you would fancy for the campaign/story, like The Darkness(a brilliant game), which I've still not managed to finish because it feels like I'm completely gimped.
I have been soldiering on with the pad, and I've made some headway, but there is no escaping how terribly backwards it all feels to a mouse and keyboard user.

It all depends on the price, I suppose. I don't think I can justify a small fortune on the few exclusive shooters I want.

Bare in mind that people have been using the XIM2 on xbox live for well over a year now. And actually loads of UK people on their forums as well. I very much doubt its had an impact on anyone's enjoyment. A lot of the really hardcore players usually aspire to be playing tournaments and clan matches where such a device wouldn't be allowed, and chances are most of the people that truly dominate on live will be the latter.

And looking at a lot of their stats on BC2 sigs they are certainly not dominating pad users. This product will not be available in the shops and will most likely only be available though the makers site....maybe a few small vendors like Lime in the UK.

Ah, well in that case ban every one with nice TVs, surround sound, steering wheels or arcade sticks then :(.

None of those give huge advantages though, bar maybe an arcade stick which arguably does give a slight advantage. None of those can be compared to the difference between a mouse + kb and a pad for accuracy and response time.

I much prefer handheld controller - feels more relaxed. After using mouse and keyboard at work last thing I want to do is use it at home. The handheld is tougher to use than mouse and keyboard but much more satisfying experience.

Would a mouse actually give that much advantage? On the console they can have bigger hit boxes to balance the greater difficulty in aiming so the extra precision may not make much difference. On PC you can ramp up the mouse sensitivity but on console I would have thought they could restrict it to move no faster than handheld? Ie prevent the whole twitch advantage through software controls. Just some thoughts.
