Xp Firewall

I use comodo because I want to filter outbound connections. If you are not arsed about that then windows firewall is fine.

they suck donkey balls and cause more problems than they claim to fix.

I use them on 5 pcs right now and i know several others that have... never had one issue with either of them

id say its mainly just preference

Don't waste your resources on a 3rd party Firewall.
Use windows firewall, Avast AV & sweep once a week with Ad-Aware & SUPERAntispyware, JD.

For a start zone alarm sometimes locks out network connections when windows is updated.

open your network connections on zone alarm to a spacific range or ip ...

and avg couldn't find a virus, even if it was called VIRUS.EXE
custom pc reported about 6 months back, somthing like a 60%+ compared to the likes of symantec

this is what i usually install, along side windows defender.

just stick to that then :p

defender has been given some of the worst results possibe in antivirus terms

windows firewall only blocks outgoing traffic (well in xp)

comodo or antiV will do (since zone alarm and avg are being slated) router firewalls are ok if it was a business router imo but it just can depend on wether you want certain software to connect outside or give you the feeling of a little more protection either way it wont hurt just become a little more annoying

Difficult to do when you can't remote on to said client pc because zone alarm is blocking you. Or when it's a corporate client which has these locked down. The problem isn't that the policies need changed - it's that Zone Alarm blocks things it shouldn't without changing a policy.

it always asks what to block unless the settings have been set to high... could be typical user error ?

No it didn't, it locked out net access full stop after an update, it was an error on the zonealarm front, the only user error involved was the installation of said crap in the first place.

as long as you have a decent viruscheck then XP firewall should be fine :)

but me personnally i use mcafee alone for my full security (xp fw disabled)

norton is meant to be good too, but i havn't used it since i got rid of my old 2002 version :D

so if i get rid of windows defender, anyone know what a suitable free replacement anti spyware i could give a download.? not just a scanner, one that runs in the background if possible.? :p
