XP on netbook

You have to edit the reg file with some changes (or merge someones reg file). If you've done that, reboot and type ewfmgr c: to check the status of the protected volume. You'll have to use 'ewfmgr c: -commit' at some point to get it to save anything you have changed or you'll lose it, you could even put in a bat file at startup. Personally with only 512Mb ram I prefer the Flashpoint beta6, works well enough for me.

I got your email, I don't finish work till 10:00pm though, I wasn't being ignorant ;)

Anyway no need for a reg file when using that application, it installs it automatically.

Once you have verified it's installed and running you will notice it is MUCH quicker, it becomes very snappy and responsive.

woah...

I've just noticed it's now not savng anything if i restart....

argh

If you want your changes to remain persistant after shut down you need to type the following into the run command:

ewfmgr.exe -commit

This will commit the current cache to the SSD at next shutdown. You need to do that periodically anyway to flush the cache out of ram (you'll notice it takes a while to shut down whilst the cache is written, this is normal).

I made a shortcut that I click before every shutdown.

No problem :)

Yeh it's much faster.....

Do i need to type that command in every now and again? Once I type that command in once will it then start saving my changes or will I start reverting back to older states if I don't keep typing the command in?

You only have to type it once per 'session', it doesn't matter when, it won't actually commit untill the next shutdown.

I've just made a shortcut...

So basically before i shutdown I can just click the shortcut and everything should be fine and dandy?

It does run super quick mind... I suppose i did nlite the xp as well though

512Mb ram? Memory is full I expect. I'd try using the flashpoint driver instead, good gains and leaves the SSD active during the session.

A pagefile only comes into use when you used all the ram. EWF uses your ram to save write cycles, so then you've defeated the purpose of the pagefile since its saving pagefile access to the ram anyway. Taking up a big lump of the stack which you can't use, look in the task manager, what does it say for memory use?

For the commit command, type it in a cmd box. Does that work? If so make a batch file for the command.

Could I not make a startup/shutdown script in group policy so i dont have to type this in cmd all the time...

should i disable pagefile then?

pagefile is using 150mb

got 340mb free memory

Am i best off doing a fresh install of xp then installing all the programs I need on it, setting it all up then doing the ewf thing and just keeping documents and that on a seperate sd card?

Yes, disable the pagefile.

As for typing the command in every time, you could just make a shortcut and put it in your startup folder, it won't actually do the commit until the next shutdown.

To be honest 512mb is on the small side for using EWF, I upgraded my machine to 1.5gb and the cache rarely gets too big.
