XP or Win7 users

well my system is a few years old:

E7400 Duo
4gig ram
GTX260 core 213

Good enough for what I use it for, but giving it to my son in a years time to get a better one.

That'll run Win7 x64 more then fine, infact I beta tested Win7 RC on 1700+ AMD cpu with 1 GB ram and 40GB HD,9700 ATi video card.

Btw I do have an old PC with 3800+ x2 AMD CPU,4GB,nforce4 board that runs Win7 x64 retail version fine too.

So when I say it won't run on Win7 I'm talking really old PC hardware ;).

My brother's 3700+ 64, 1GB RAM and onboard graphics PC ran 7 Pro without issue. Wasn't lightning quick, obviously, but ran well enough for browsing and watching movies etc. :D

It runs ok in single core virtual machines with 512mb. In fact, the only reason I've chosen to keep XP on some old machines was not performance but lack of drivers for the onboard sound.

If you're going to get rid of it anyway you could just wait a year and get it preinstalled with a new machine/buy it with your self-build.

True.

Might just have the dual OS to see what the hype is about.

I remember those days when Win Me came out and everything went to hell, so I'm moving ever so slowly when a new OS comes out (too slowly I guess).

that will run win 7 64bit great
my old laptop that i first used win 7 64bit on was a 1.8 amd duelcore with 2gig ram and a gforce 7600 and it ran win 7 fine

Oh god are you really comparing it with Windows Mistake Edition? :D
I remember them days too.

The good thing is today, the WinME is now Vista, and XP is Win7.
XP has lasted 10 years, I'm pretty sure 7 will too  You really need to get it installed and judge for yourself.

Win Me is the worst OS I could think of and that I was stuck with when I got my work pc from my job, so just thinking about those wonderful days with that hmmm interesting OS makes me ever so much careful now. I have had the other OS' as well other than Linux, so used to enjoy Win98, so XP has been the best for me, but we'll see after I install Win7.

TY

Vista was in no way the failure that ME was. Vista was quite a dramatic rewrite under the hood and hardware manufacturers were lazy with driver support after 7+ years of coding/support for XP! I used Vista x64 from release and found it a pleasure to use.

True, but Vista was such a blinding success that they went ahead and released Win7, 2 years later anyway.

I've also noticed people on this forum don't take well to references, comparisons metaphors, examples or even basic English.
I was trying to relate to the OP on his days of WinME, it was not a direct comparison. No matter how good Vista is or isn't, it is still "todays mistake edition" when compared to Win7, see my point now?

Win7 came out 2 years after vista because that was the roadmap plan and in another year or so Windows 8 will be announced and released as well.

MS said previously they will release a new OS more often than ever before.

Vista was perfectly fine, just some hardware configurations didn't work properly at first due to manufacturers not having stable drivers. I had it since BETA and it was fine on my gaming hardware and I had zero issues all the way through until I upgraded to 7.

It was fine for the people who never had compatibility problems with applications and drivers. The problems lay with business application compatibility and hardware driver issues.

I installed it too and never had issues.

You forget Win7 is based on Vista,Vista did a lot of the ground work for Win7,also drivers had matured by time Win7 was released.
I for one am sick of people comparing Vista to ME,they don't have a clue.

Btw Microsoft are back on a 3 year roadmap,Win8 is not far off, does that make Win7 bad?...hell no.
I used Vista from its inital release right up until Win7 and it was fine OS IMHO,I do a lot of beta games testing and was amazed how much unfounded FUD was spread about Vista, seems FUD is always around not matter how much time goes by.

I'll be upgrading to Win8 too but not because I think Win7 is bad(its a very good OS IMHO),I just like trying new things .

Quick comment on drivers, remember drivers are down to the manufacturer in question not OS or Microsoft(unless its their hardware product).

Couldn't have said it better myself :).

Windows 3.0 = 1990
Windows 95 = 1995 (5 years)
Windows 98 = 1998 (3 years)
Windows ME = 2000 (2 years)
Windows XP = 2001 (1 year)
Windows Vista = 2007 (6 years )
Windows 7 = 2009 (2 years)

Microsoft released a new operating system every 2-3 years. XP was a freak of nature as Microsoft were dragging their hells until OS X and Linux grew in popularity. A 2 year life cycle for an operating system is fairly normal. Don't forget OS X gets updated nearly every year :).

I still use XP but I use windows 7 to. XP is one of the best operating systems MS made. It takes about ten years for an OS to mature.

I don't like to keep changing every few years but i am slowly moving away from XP.

Jesus christ !!
Re-read BOTH my posts, I didn't compare them.
I swear some people are as thick as pig **** round here, it was a reference/relation to the OP, not a comparison. /facepalm

It makes me sick when people only read what they want to read and act accordingly without thinking first, they don't have a clue.

Actually that remark was not about you personally but about other people that compare ME to Vista(I said people not you),rest of the quotes I stated was about me disagreeing with your post on why Win7 was released etc....

I agree about the sick part,I wish people would read correctly what I say ;).

OP, I've been using Win7 on my desktop for a while (64bit Ultimate) and wouldn't go back to XP.

I like havings Libraries that work across multiple disks, the way you can search within the Start Menu and Control Panel as well as Explorer. I like the fact that some services have a delayed start, so you get to a working desktop quicker. Although when I upgraded to Win7 I also went for an SSD :) , so I get to my desktop within 15 seconds of booting up.

I'm also running Win7 (32bit Pro) on my NC10 netbook and it works fine.

I believe there is also a "XP Mode" within Win7 that will run your old software if you had problems with compatibility.
