greyedout.png

I came about after a virus,

any ideas?

Thanks

Because I haven't used it and can't give advice re: a program I've not used.
It's completely unnecessary to use a program for the customisation he needs.

Edit: If you right click an image and choose set as background (or whatever)
does it work?
I assume you have up to date AV software and have scanned etc. ?

after a bit of googling , i found this . There's fix further down the first page. try it.

you dont know what it does so how is it 'completely unnecessary'? all it is, is a patched uxtheme.dll (shock) and a load of re-draw icons and bitmaps. In other words, it makes everything look better. Look on the site and you'll see what difference it makes:) what you've told him to do, is un-install the hacked .dll, remove the new icons and bmps then reinstall the .dll :o unnecessary maybe?

hmmm no dont worry...

Download and save Cleandesktop to your computer from this link: http://www.thespykiller.co.uk/files/cleandesktop.exe and double click on the cleandesktop.exe

It will automatically extract to c:\desktopclean where it needs to be to run and will automatically run the cleandesktop.vbs script

If it doesn't open then go to c:\desktopclean and double click on the cleandesktop.vbs Do not run any other file from there please unless asked to

If you have script blocking enabled you will get a warning about a malicious script wanting to run. Please allow this script to run. It is not malicious.

If you get a message when you first run it "Can not find script file "blah blah blah" then don't worry just doubleclick the cleandesktop.vbs script again you sometimes get that message when a script blocker blocks the script

It will then kill Explorer. You will lose your taskbar and desktop. It will repair the registry entries returning your normal desktop and context menu functions.

It will restart Explorer.

Once you have performed the big cleanup, each of the other Users on the System needs to be signed in to clean up their desktop and regain the right click.

I have included another vbs to do this. It is named Other Profiles Regfix.vbs

Have each User sign in and run Other Profiles Regfix.vbs
Open C:\ (Go to Start>Run and type C: Press enter) and Open the c:\desktopclean folder. Double click on Other Profiles Regfix.vbs

Explorer will be ended and that user's active desktop registry entries will be repaired. Explorer will be restarted.

To restore the desktop to whatever picture you normally have right click on a blank part of desktop & select properties/desktop & select your prefered picture press apply & then ok to exit and then press F5

You will need to do this step for every user account.

give that a go:)

Installing software is unnecessary when you can copy and paste a file.
I advised him to uninstall it because it obviously wasn't working for him.
The patch I uploaded worked, so what's the big deal?
If it's only a patched .dll and my solution was a patched .dll what's the difference?
Any theme will make things look better.

Edit: good find above :)

it was working fine, it was just it was user error. i dont reall mind what he uses but what's the point in telling him to uninstall thing because you dont know how it works? if he would have installed that theme under xpize, it still would have worked. there are plenty of people here who do use xpize, and use it without problems. as it is his problems are nothing to do with xpize:)

yeah, any theme can improve things, but what about all those old icons and bmps that look out of place with new themes? that's what xpize is for.

this is what my desktop looks like using xpize,a program called styler and the tango icon set:

Well user error as it may be, I'm not going to install software specifically to help out someone on a forum.
I didn't know how to use the software of the top of my head but I was the only person offering a solution at the time and the OP was getting anxious.
I don't do icons. I have objectdock and active desktop :)

I ran the exe and it restored it but I cannot complete the whole process becuase the start bar on the bottom wont work, when I put my mouse over it it shows the hourglass and I cant click. how do I get to the "run" program without going through start?

start bar? you mean the task bar at the bottom of the screen? might have crashed. you could try killing the explorer.exe process using the task manager (CTRL+ALT+DELETE, processes tab) and then starting a new explorer.exe process (applications tab, 'new task'.then type 'explorer' and hit return). if that doesnt work, try rebooting?

you're out of your element shameless Big Lebowski quote
