Yakuza 0

Sorry, I misread. I thought you meant money. Yes, the completion points. I need to have a look at those. I think I picked the first one already which is something I can't remember now. :o

The ability was called Limit Break in the Japanese version, IIRC. I won't tell you what it's for as I don't want to spoil anything for you but do as much sidestuff as possible, including substories, especially the big ones for Kiryu/Majima. If you don't feel like it,it's not mandatory of course, just a heads-up.

First time I encountered him, he was in the Caberet Club and my wife was in the room and then the ingame camera zooms in on him. Explaining wtf was going on was a tough ordeal!

LMFAO, I reckon it took some explaining:D

I see that this is available for a mere £10 on Voidu. Not overly sure on the game, whether it fits my taste, but for the sake of a tenner I'll take a punt.

The only thing that puts me off a little, is the fact that it's subtitled. As is sometimes the case with subbed films, the text draws the eye away from the action / visuals. Still, looks like a good fix before Shenmue is released.

Yeah, this is what is happening to me. But will get used to it soon I suppose. I wish I just understood Japanese as it does sound cool.

I played this twice on PS4, bought it full price there, and dropped it each time after few hours.

The inconsistency of presentation, where some rare cutscenes are voices, some are unvoiced, some dialogues have nonsense sounds, some are mute...it is annoying as hell.

Plus the start of the story - about some parcel dispute - is not exactly thrilling.

Plus the gameplay seems to be basically some brawling combat combined with collection of minigames. Not a super interesting stuff.

BUT, one day, I will give it a third chance and break through that boring start and get into it, I swear...

Hahaha. I do agree with a lot of what you said actually. But I will not let it stop me! :D

Way too quick too judge, this is a big game. Also, it's quite niche and made on a PS3 engine. Even Angry Joe praised it to hell and back and I was sure he would hate it.

Such statements apply to every game, even your beloved Witcher, which is just dialogues mixed with subpar combat/horse-riding and a card game. And it's literally all you do, there aren't any other mechanics. Yet I found it good after the boring start.

It's the same with this, it thrives on its atmosphere and substories, just like Witcher, and you'd be surprised how much those stupid minigames and substories flesh out the game. You've seen nothing after a couple of hours. Same goes for the combat once you unlock all those ridiculous heat actions and styles.

The thing is, Witcher has consistent presentation, great characters and dialogue and vastly more interesting and atmospheric world right from the start. Yakuza 0 really has an immensely boring beginning. I do not doubt that there is a great game in there and one day I am sure I will discover it, but upon two tries so far, I always had to force myself to play it.

I wonder, is the new PS4 only Yakuza 6 finally done properly with full voice acting for all dialogue and normal cutscenes?

That's all horses for courses, as usual. I agree W3 is a good game but (I'm not writing this to spite you, don't get me wrong) I felt the world was typical medieval fantasy and the main story was nowhere near what it was hyped up to beand had poor pacing. Good dialogues and good world in certain places but everything else not so extraordinary. Stuff went downhill after Baron's.

Besides, these are two completely different games, it's hard to compare their atmospheres, worlds and stories, especially when one was made for vastly inferior hardware and is a completely different genre. One is serious, one mixes stuff up with its silly distractions and odd humour. All I know is that I had more fun and more laughs in Yakuza once it got rolling. I don't mind those technicalities that much and dialogues were no problem for me, I look at games as games.

Well, there's also the probability that the series just isn't for you, nothing wrong with that.

Yes, Y6 is fully voiced and made on a different engine.

Is this Sleeping Dogs 2? Not read much on it, anything actually, but just seen a quick trailer on YouTube and seen this thread. I loved Sleeping Dogs, been waiting for another for ages.

No it's not. It's an arcade-ish brawler with lots of side content and it can be quirky.

I'd recommend it wholeheartedly but I now feel it hasn't been made for the technicalities and graphics obsessed PC crowd. Plus, it might be hard to appreciate an origins story of characters you know nothing about from a 13-year old series.

I fell in love with the series years before for its sheer fun factor, brutal combat and hilarity but not everyone will feel like that. For me the game has it all and it's not a cookie-cutter experience like most but it might take time to get into.

Hmm, I'm afraid I'm calling time on this myself. I've given it 6 hours and after the initial session on Wednesday, I wasn't hooked enough to come back to it until tonight. Now that spark of interest has gone totally. I'm finding the combat very lacklustre - mashing X and then hitting Y over and over again. I don't understand what difference fighting stance makes at all. I can't even do that 60 seconds of punching competition in the car park.

Nah, I much prefer the style of gameplay in Sleeping Dogs than this. Oh well.

It seems you don't undestand the combat yet, and fair enough, after six hours you haven't seen nothing of it yet. If anything, Sleeping Dogs has a lot more limited combat, it might be more appealing because it's really easy, but I liked it as well. That 60secs in the car park is easy. Here's an example of one of the styles with some unlocked abilities like sways and contextual heat actions:

There are four styles for each characters, each with their own skill trees and heat actions, quite a lof of stuff really. They are completely different and give you different abilities and there are also different combos and grabs.

Of course if you don't find it fun, then drop it, no point in forcing yourself, just wanted to explain the system. Obviously, it won't be like Sleeping Dogs but there are a lot more finishers here.

EDIT:

Since you'll probably drop the series, here are all the Heat actions from 6 on the new engine:D
