Anyone have any idea how the Yamaha stereo amps compare to the stereo receivers?

I'm currently looking at building a shortlist and was looking at the Yamaha S801 which is around £600. However they also do a model called the 803D which looks to have the same specs of the S801 but with network/streaming extra functionality. It's also about £50 cheaper.

Lower down the range it seems they have alternate numbers. So i presume the S301 is comparable to the 402D and the S501 is comparable to the 602D

Actually, now i'm talking it through i assume therefore that the 803D is more likely to be comparable to the S701 rather than the S801.

Anyone have any idea for confirmation though? Only Peter Tyson sell the 803D and the sales guy i spoke to on the phone had no idea other than to say they were both great amps :/

I'm interested in this too.

I'm currently looking at the rn602d and the rn803d Yamaha amps to replace my little Denon N9.

Reviews seem pretty good for both amps with the newer 803d being a bit more powerful and well featured.

Yeah i spotted your thread over on AVF

Stock seems to be insanely low everywhere which doesn't help!

I've a feeling i'd be happy with the 602N given my current situation, but i can't help myself looking higher up the range!

Yes, I have been trying to get my head around all the models and options :)

I think I have pretty much settled on the 602d/803d. Like you say, the 803d is pretty difficult to get hold of :( It's been available for around a year now and still stock seems limited.

I think I'd be happy with the 602d though, which can be bought for £320.

Maybe there just isn't the demand for this type of amp. Everyone is buying Sonos and soundbars now :(

Personal I'd keep the streaming separate to the amp, built in may be poop or doesn't work how you like, but if you have external media player change that as needed.

The streaming on my yam avr isn't as good as squeezebox

The Product Manager for this line has a bit of a gamble to make. At the physical size and the retail price, will customers buy the 803D, or is it too close to the traditional Hi-Fi amp that when it comes to the crunch they bottle it and go for the safe option?

In the 60's and 70's the receiver was bread & butter for the Hi-Fi trade. Then came the evolution of the separates market where dedicated amps sounded better and the receiver fell out of fashion. I don't see any evidence that the trend will swing back in the full-sized market, but I think designers have enough experience dealing with digital noise suppression in the AV receiver market that they can now produce a 2 channel receiver with credible Hi-Fi performance.

These will still be looked down on by traditional Hi-Fi enthusiasts, even if a blind test could prove they're up to the mark. I think that's their loss as there's definitely a seachange towards streaming that can't be ignored.

After a brief peek at the specs, then power-wise the A-S701 and the RN803D look to be close or identical.

Cheers guys, i've ended up ordering an ex-dem S801 for £499 which is being delivered tomorrow. The store is fairly local to me so if i decide against it i can always return it.

Looks like the main difference between the S801 and the S701 is the addition of a USB input which will be handy for me connecting the Raspberry Pi.

I replaced my Denon N5 with the Yamaha RN602D due to the Denon mobile app being total pants.

For the money, the Yamaha offers a lot of features and sound quality. Mine is hooked up to a pair of QAcoustics Concept 20s on the QAccoustics stands. The Yamaha Multicast app hasn't given me any trouble, my music collection is in FLAC format on a WD MyCloud drive. I use the network radio function once in a while, and that works great. The RN602 has two optical inputs and a coaxial digit input, so I`ve got mine hooked up to my TV and Blu-Ray player.

Overall, well worth the upgrade.

Excellent, thanks for the review there :)

I'm thinking I'll wait and see if the rn803 drops in price between now and Christmas.

If not, I'll probably pick up an rn602.

In the meantime my Denon N9 is doing a decent job.

Pretty happy with the sound of the S801 so far from limited listening. Although i think i'm having slight buyers remorse. My long term goal is to work on my wife to let me move my amp/speakers either side of the TV which would hugely improve the sound quality, much more so than just buying new stuff.

Having the 803D would aid me in doing this because i could pick up the new Yamaha turntable which has music cast built in. That would let me leave it where it is rather than moving the whole hifi over to near the tv.

Definitely go for the rn803, then you can review it for me :p

I'm guessing the sound signature will be very similar between all Yamaha amps. So you'd probably be just as happy with the sound from the rn803.

It's definitely a better value piece of kit, if you are going to make use of the extra features.

I finally ordered a R-N803D in silver this morning that will be delivered on Mon, I’ll report back on here.

I was debating whether I should go for a separate amp and network streamer, however after lots of reading and deliberation I finally decided to go for this unit.

This post is quite interesting:

Especially the images of the insides of the units.

Excellent :) I'll be very interested in your opinions on this unit.

Did you consider the rn602 at all? Is the rn803 worth the extra £200 do you think?

Yes, I did consider that receiver too. However, in the end I managed to find a re-furbished R-N803D that has come directly from the Yamaha factory (it is factory sealed). I was told that these are usually customer returns that have then been fully tested and re-packed by Yamaha with brand new accessories. In the end I paid £470 for it. It has a 2yr warranty with Yamaha.

I was also considering going down the full separates route and getting a standalone integrated amplifier such as the A-S801 or the lower powered but well regarded CXA60 and then buying a network streamer such as the NP-S303 separately - however that would have cost nearly £400 more than what I paid for the R-N803D.

The A-S801 (which I also looked at closely) seems to be one of Yamaha's better amplifiers. From what I have read, the R-N803D shares much common circuitry with it (Yamaha call it ToP-ART), with some reviews saying there is no discernible difference in sound. Also, the inclusion of the YAPO technology and bass management sounds interesting.

I'll see how I get on with it. I've been told that if I'm not happy for any reason I can return it within 14 days.

I'll let you know how it goes after it arrives on Mon. This will replace my current amplifier which is a Monitor Audio A100 (50W). My speakers are the B&W 685 S2 and I also have a B&W ASW 608 subwoofer (I only purchased the subwoofer last week). The A100 has been great over the last couple of years, however I now feel like something a little more advanced/connected.

Fingers crossed it's as good as expected. Looking forward to hearing your opinion on it.

Looks like it can be bought for £559 from some sites. With the rn602 £319.

I'm torn between these two. If the rn803 is worth the extra, I'll go for it.

I'd probably go for it if i was you if you can afford it. Overwise you're always wondering "what if"

I decided to buy the little Yamaha WXAD10 musiccast box for mine. Pretty much turns it into the 803 but with the better dac and USB input which is handy for me. Have also picked up the matching Yamaha CD player.

Sounds like a nice setup you have there mate.

I'd probably do the same, but I just don't have the room for a full rack of separates :(

So one box that does it all is a must.

Did you receive the rn803 amp? Have you had a chance to set it up and have a play?

My finger is twitching on the buy button now :p

Hello! Yes, I recieved it on Monday. I set it up and had a bit of a play. Initial impressions are very good.

I’m actually off tomorrow so will have a good play with it and listen to some different types of music. I’ll also test out some of the features and then write a review on this thread - either tomorrow evening or Saturday :)

One thing I will say.. it’s very heavy ;)
