Yamaha Integrated vs Yamaha Stereo Receiver Model Numbers

Yeah, i found the S801 pretty weighty too. Might be different on the 803 but you can tell the transformer is on the left as the weight distribution is mental. It's a good job it's not a car!

Hello! Yes, I recieved it on Monday. I set it up and had a bit of a play. Initial impressions are very good.

I’m actually off tomorrow so will have a good play with it and listen to some different types of music. I’ll also test out some of the features and then write a review on this thread - either tomorrow evening or Saturday :)

One thing I will say.. it’s very heavy ;)

Glad the impressions are good so far :)

When you say heavy, how heavy exactly? I was thinking of picking one up from richer sounds, would it be too heavy to carry back to the car?

Edit: just looked up the weight on the spec sheet, it's 11kg, so yeah, pretty darn heavy! Might be tricky to carry if the box is as large as I think it might be :p

The box isn't too bad to be honest. It's easily carryable (helps i'm over 6ft though so have long arms to reach round!)

I've had some amps around double the weight. They were awkward!

Agreed, the 803 is the same, with the heavy transformer on the left. The weight distribution caught me out a little when I was lifting it too.

The box is reasonably large - you wouldn’t want to walk any distance down the street with it. Carrying it in your car though would be no problem. Just make sure you can park as close as possible to RS :)

There are online companies that sell it for less than RS though. Also, RS may not have it in stock. I wanted to go to my local branch and have a look at one, when I phoned up they told me it was a special order item. I guess it’s in their interest to stock more of the Cambridge Audio kit?

The factory refreshed unit I purchased with a £99 saving was from what I could tell brand new - the only difference was a small printed sticker on the box saying ‘Refurbished by Yamaha’. Not a mark or fingerprint on it and the unit and all accessories and paperwork sealed and new. I was going to go for a black unit, but they only had a refurbished unit in silver - which I’m actually very happy with and glad I made a saving there.

Ps, I just noticed that RS have a flash discount on it at the moment. However, even after the discount it’s still available for less elsewhere. However RS are a fantastic company and I would be happy to pay a little more to buy on the day from them if possible.

I’m looking forward to writing my review :)

I emailed the Leicester richer sounds and they have both the 602 and the 803 in stock at the moment. They said they would happily price match the 803 down to £549 (current price at superfi). So I'll probably pick it up from there :) Will call them first just to double check though.

Will have to park fairly close then, sounds like it's a bit of a beast :p

That’s great news - Richer Sounds are fantastic :) You could even listen to (or audition I should say ;)) both of them. IMHO though, pay the extra for the 803, especially if you are going to keep it for a while. I think I read every review I could on it and it’s worth the extra scratch.

I do plan on keeping it quite a while, so it is probably worth paying out for the 803.

Richer sounds are very good, I'll buy from them as long as they have it in stock and will price match.

Doubt I'll manage to get over this weekend, but hopefully the next one. Would be good to have a listen before parting with the readies :)

That’s great! Let me know what you think.

I’ve been really pleased with mine so far. The sound is detailed and rich and the soundstage seems very wide with each instrument coming through beautifully. I’ve listened to a wide range of music from classical to rock. I have a pair of B&W 685 S2 speakers and a B&W ASW608 subwoofer.

I have Apple Music and have been streaming wirelessly using AirPlay, playing FLAC files from my NAS and listening to audio from my PC via an optical input. Also, the Net Radio is great. I also have a one month free trial of Tidal going at the moment, this is setup via the MusicCast app and works perfectly - however I won’t be keeping it beyond the free month as I’m perfectly happy with Apple Music.

I tried YPAO and found that it makes a notable difference to the sound stage. However, it seems so intent on creating a neutral and balanced sound that it can be a little reluctant to use the subwoofer at times. I don’t listen with heavy bass by any means, however having YPAO off and adjusting the crossover on the subwoofer manually to match my speakers seems to give me good results. However vocals do seem clearer with YPAO on. I still need to play with this a little more. Also, you can tweak all YPAO settings via the MusicCast app - I’ve installed this both on my iPhone and iPad.

One thing that I was particularly impressed with was the ability to set a volume limit to protect the speakers/your hearing. Also, the way the app increases the volume is very clever, not allowing you to accidentally slide it to maximum - hard to describe, but you’ll see what I mean. It just seems very well thought out.

Mine arrived running the latest firmware, so I’ve not needed to update it.

I’ve yet to try Bluetooth, USB, or any of the analogue inputs.

However, as expected, this is a fantastic quality class A/B amplifier and I’m delighted with it so far.

Excellent, good to hear your thoughts :)

Had a bit of a play so far. Quickly set it up to stream music from my pc using DLNA and it sounds great so far.

Also checked it works with my TV via the optical input.

Very pleased with it so far.

How do you check the firmware version? Mine came up with a firmware update message but it disappeared and hasn't come back.

To check firmware, do the following: on the remote control, press setup, scroll to ‘Network’ and press enter, then scroll down to ‘Update’ and press enter, scroll down until you see the version. Press setup again to exit.

You can also check firmware via the MusicCast app.

The current version is 1.13

Hope you’re enjoying it :)

Thanks a lot, will try that today. I'm suspecting it's probably up to date though.

Played quite a few tracks on it now and it's definitely on another level to the Denon. The N9 was great for what it is, but the Yamaha is a much more serious piece of audio equipment.

The Yamaha paired with my monitor Audio Bronze 5 speakers is by far the best setup I have ever owned.

Will probably keep this setup for years now :)
