Yellow box junction ticket

I wish more people would get tickets for stopping in them - there is one outside work where people get held up needlessly because someone can't manage to use them properly and blocks the exit for people going another way.

This, the amount of times I get blocked on Long Lane going across Tower Bridge Road as everyone stops with half a car sticking out into the yellow box.

Appeal it, at least you have a viable reason for doing so (not just chancing your arm). I got one for moving out of the way for an ambulance near the kings road in Chelsea, they cancelled the ticket after reviewing the footage :)

If that road was closed then there is no need for the junction to be "boxed"

Ask them for the justification.
Then ask the council for proof of the road closure.

Then you can rebut their justification with evidence the road was in-fact closed, thus leaving no reason to give way.

Please ensure you are familiar with the Highway Code before using a car again, thanks :p

Always been my understanding never to enter a box junction if going straight unless you can exit it without stopping.

Its only ok to stop if you are turning and forced to stop because of (opposing) traffic. I presume the road you are turning into is busy must also be a valid reason to stop too.

Good luck and post back if you have any luck with the appeal.

ps3ud0

Since the situation had some extenuating circumstance, you might as well try to appeal, what harm can it do?

But I agree with the notion that everyone should decide if rules do/don't apply based on their reasoning skills possibly isn't the best idea..

perfectly fine to enter one if you are turning right btw, I used to rage at idiots that didn't know this and made me later and later for work

Nope, your exit must be clear, doesn't matter if you're turning/going straight on, if there's traffic queuing in your exit which causes you to have to stop in the box, you've committed the offence

I'm in the "burn them at the stake" camp. Almost every day on my drive to work I get stuck for 2-3 cycles of a set of lights on a roundabout because people joining the roundabout decide to ignore the massive box junction across my exit, and the timing of the lights means they don't move until my lights are red again (at which point someone else decides to block the road as my lights go green...)

There is a really silly one near me. No camera but gets blocked all the time due to poorly timed lights with the surrounding junctions. :/

Poorly timed lights or poor drivers entering when they shouldnt?

Its pretty straightforward - If your exit is not clear do not enter the box junction.

What about if your exit is clear when you enter but while waiting for opposing traffic your exit becomes blocked by opposing traffic turning into it? Genuine question and not just trying to be difficult by the way

Or following the same idea, your going straight all is clear as you enter the box someone overtakes you and cuts in front meaning you end up stopped in the box.

The introduction to the Highway Code states:

Many of the rules in the Code are legal requirements, and if you disobey these rules you are committing a criminal offence. You may be fined, given penalty points on your licence or be disqualified from driving. In the most serious cases you may be sent to prison. Such rules are identified by the use of the words ‘MUST/MUST NOT’.

Rule 174 has the words MUST NOT and is therefore a legal requirement.

Box junctions. These have criss-cross yellow lines painted on the road (see 'Road markings'). You MUST NOT enter the box until your exit road or lane is clear. However, you may enter the box and wait when you want to turn right, and are only stopped from doing so by oncoming traffic, or by other vehicles waiting to turn right. At signalled roundabouts you MUST NOT enter the box unless you can cross over it completely without stopping.

Many people forget the law about box junctions and enter into box junctions without checking to see if they can enter and exit without stopping behind a staionary vehicle at all within the yellow box. If the traffic is moving slowly and you see red brake lights, beware, you could find yourself coming to a stop within the yellow box junction and thereby commiting an offence.

You have auotomatically commited an offence if

1) The exit was not clear when you entered the yellow box junction
2) You entered the yellow box junction and stopped behind a stationary vehicle
3) Part of your vehicle is inside the yellow box junction and your vehicle is stationary

The relevant part of the legislation that covers box junction is reproduced below

The Traffic Signs Regulations and General Directions 2002

Road markings shown in diagrams 1025.1, 1025.3, 1025.4, 1043 and 1044: bus stop and bus stand clearways and box junctions

29.

(2) The road markings shown in diagrams 1043 and 1044 shall convey the prohibition specified in Part II of Schedule 19.

Or, whilst entering the box junction, an asteroid lands in front of you preventing you from going forward and exiting the box....
