Evening all,

Here we go, I seem to have fallen victim to the following. I sold my old Samsung Galaxy Alpha on the bay last week, used and described thoroughly and genuinely as much as possible. I had it up as a Buy It now for a quick sale and it sold within a couple of days, shipped out on Thursday evening and delivered to the buyer on Friday morning.

Buyer emails me not long after it arrives basically thanking me for a smooth sale and her son is very happy with the phone and she leaves positive feedback later on that evening too. Fast forward to this evening and I received this from her;

"Hi I have purchased this mobile for my son and since getting it and setting the phone up we can not get the the finger print system to work it just comes up with a error message. We have tried resetting the phone and been on numerous forums and it seems to be that it's a fault with the phone. You have sold this phone as having no issues and as new but there is an issue and we need it to be fixed. Can you either let us have the purchase details receipt etc so that we can return the phone to the original shop of purchase to get it fixed or replaced, alternatively we can send it back to you for a refund. This item is sold as being covered by the ebay money back guarantee and is not as you advertised.

As you can understand my son is 13 and has spent his own money on this and is very upset that it's nots working as it should, I would appreciate your cooperation in getting this sorted ASAP"

Now I can vouch that the fingerprint scanner was working prior to me selling the phone, as I had used to a good number of times when making mobile purchases via PayPal etc. but I hadn't used it for a while up to the point of me coming to sell it. I haven't responded back to the buyer yet but where do I stand at the moment, am I screwed either way as I am expecting?

Many thanks - Liam.

Bend over, expect a different handset to be returned.

Did you take any details such as EMEI number?

I thought as much :( Yep I did indeed, in fact the IMEI is just about clearly displayed on one of the photos on my original listing.

Liam.

This is why I have so much PC junk in back stock. Refuse to sell it on eBay waiting till the day I get MM access and can sell it here to good people.

Liam.

You 'should' be covered if a different handset is returned then (Don't forget 99.99999% of the time eBay side with the buyer), did you send the retail box or have you an original receipt as these will clearly state the IMEI number of the handset.

We will see what happens. What I am thinking about is replying to the seller asking what the error in question is and also, if they have tried resetting the phone the proper way i.e. factory resetting and if they are operating the fingerprint scanner correctly (stating the obvious, I know - but I want to iron anything out before I entertain the idea of them returning anything yet).

The phone itself was sent in the original box with all the original items included. I don't have the receipt in my possession unfortunately as I purchased the phone privately but it was brand new and unopened.

Liam.

There isn't much point fighting it unfortunately. I would accept a return as soon as possible and take it from there. With any luck they have just changed their minds and want you to pay for them to return it.

When accepting a return make sure you give them instructions and set a maximum you are willing to pay for this. You don't want them sending it back Special Delivery at your expense.

How long has passed since you sold it and her leaving feedback?

EDIT: Nevermind didn't read OP properly, still within 30 days so fun time bum time.

Assuming they paid by paypal, have you withdrawn the money?

If so fight it, if they side with the buyer just ignore it, you got the money, and dont use ebay again to sell anything of high value.

Think I've had about 3/4 ebay/paypal accounts closed over the years for various reasons, at least one was left in minus. Only use it to buy stuff now.

Ask if she's sure her son has fingerprints. I hear the best scammers and crooks remove them these days.

Or tell her you removed the scanner due to paranoia they'd match your finger prints to the murder of the last eBay scammer you met :D.
