Yet another newbie question (A8V-E SE)

Hi there, Im rather new to this whole overclocking "thing". I have an AMD 3700+(2200mhz and stock cooler), 1GB Corsair XMS3200PT TwinX and an Asus A8V-E SE mobo.
My question is, If i was to think about trying to overclock this, would it be a safe bet, to use the built in AI overclocking utility on the mobo, instead of me fiddling around, saves breaking something :p

Welcome to the forums :)

You can look here and here for OCs with your chip (although take some of the data from the first link with a pinch of salt - look for the average clocks). Hope that helps.

Another vote for F@H ...

That helps a lot, thanks

Hey again... I was wondering if the Asus AI Booster program is any good, as i got it with my mobo. Does it help at all, as it bypasses the whole having to reboot into bios thing to increase/decrease Overclock settings.

I think it just does what Ai overclocking does in the bios. Increases various things by various small percentages when the cpu is under load.

Its not proper overclocking, and i don't think its particularly safe either. I wouldn't and don't use it on either of my asus boards.

It actually has a tools, that allow you to overclock just like in the Bios, for example:

Though I can see your point.. Because if it crashed your computer then you still need to reboot and fiddle in bios in order to get back to the desktop :o

Oh yea, while we're on the subject, I have a TT blue orb II lying around somewhere and I was wondering if it would be a better cooler than the current stock one I have.

Hmm I replaced the stock cooler with the blue orb, its running at 23c idle.. Though when I open the asus probe to see voltage and temp.. the alarm keeps goin off for the vcore as it jumps from 1.38v down to 1.34v then back up.. Will that be a problem? Bloody thing nearly gave me an heart attack..

*edit2* Ok sorry about all that.. I just checked on the amd site and 1.35v/1.4v is natural.. The whole alarm thing just scared me :p

I know this has nothing to do with what you guys are talking about but i had to enquire if you had had probs deception
Did you have problems with your on board sound (if you have on board sound that is).
thanks

Ive had no problems at all with the board, not even the sound. I was just enquiring, what were my possibilities with overclocking my cpu.

uh Hi again..

When looking around my bios, I cant seem to find the HT multi  If anyone knows where I can find it, it would be helpful.. (I can find all the other OC options, just not the HT multi part)

Should be in chipset settings, could be in jumperfree settings or cpu settings under htt.

Its not usually very clearly labeled, but look for a multi ranging from 1 to 5 and thats it.

Ive had a look under all the options in bios, and it doesnt seem to be anywhere, not even any ranging from 1 to 5  CPU is currently at 2550(255x10) on stock volts, though im not finished there, but its a little update.

It might go from 200 to 1000

200
400
...
1000

It depends on which BIOS you have.

// EDIT // It may also be called the LDT (Lightening Data Transfer) Multi.

I fount it thanks. It was under LDT Bus Frequency, like you said.. 4x is 800 right?

Yup. 4x 250 = 1000mhz.
Make sure the memory is below 200mhz. Use cpuz to check.
Is it still passing prime95 with no extra voltage?

Ok ill set it to 3x then, the memory is currently at 216.7mhz, and thats when I stuck the divider on 166.. Its also passing Prime too, so far so good.

Looking good. Remember to keep an eye on temps and don't raise the voltage above 1.55

I will do.. CPU temp is currently at 36c, with prime95 running on torture test.. I'll try S&M after that aswell and memtest.. Is the memory speed ok?

As long as its less than 200 its ok. Looks like you'll get that to 2.8 or perhaps even 3. ;)

lol I was reading that and computer restarted  I guess it wasnt as stable as I thought it was..

*Edit* I lowered the FSB to 250 and now CPU-Z says my Vcore is 2.94, but my Asus Pc-Probe says its at 1.47v. Ok after 5-10mins, Cpu-z has gone back to saying its at 1.47

hmm strange prime95 should pick up any instability. Try running it for a little longer each time.

Now I cant seem to find the Vcore settings.. under the jumperfree settings(where you OC the CPU) the only options that are there, which I dont know are:

Hammer Vid Control, which is set at 1.400v, but the highest it can be put is 1.450v.

CPU Vcore Offset, I did think this was what I wanted, but it only has two options, which are +100mv and +200mv.

*Edit* Nevermind, it seems the Hammer Vid Control was the actual Vcore setting

ok a lil update: CPU is currently at 265x10 and 36c on full load, stable.. Only had to raise the vcore by 0.125 as thats the minimun it would go up in. All looks good so far. :D
