Yet another project....The uncrashed spitfire

lol me! if you read back in the thread the car was sitting in bare metal coming up to winter so i had to do something to protect the new metal quick so it didnt rust, so i resprayed the car in 6 hours, no prep work at all jsut a light key. im quite good with the gun hence the rest of it came out ok but the bootlid really needed some prep. same with the drivers door. Its going in soon to be fixed by a pro.

And dont worry dingleberry, you now have 3 months to catch up as im going into hospital in 6 hours for major leg surgery, the final stages of rehabilitation after my accident a year ago.

Well i got out 2 days ago after problems with surgery meaning i will have to go back in again, i do have some tasty scars from my hip to my knee now though. but hey.

Well im bored stupid of sitting about so put the pistons back in, now they have been skimmed.

IMG_2900.JPG

Pistons now are all identical 10 thou protruding from the block which is about perfect.

Im ready for final assembly now, just need to work out the best way to do it/

Anyway,

I've been busy with my paintbrush painting the last few things.

Cylinder head has had a new colour put on it to match the engine, the red didnt quite go.

IMG_2905.JPG

all the other bits on the engine are satin black, it looks soooo cool together, they are glossy just now but dry satin

IMG_2904.JPG

Finally got my ass in gear and started doing stuff to get it back together for the final time.

Alloy bits on and tightened up. Rear crank seal on.

IMG_2914.JPG

Back plates on and tightened down and the engine is back on the stand.

IMG_2917.JPG

someone had a good point regarding sealing the front plate with paint on it, so i sanded it back to bare metal.

Not sure if anyone still reads this, but hey.

Just as things were going swimingly another problem part, the timing chain doesnt fit! doh! Yet another supplier is gonna get a rant tomorrow.

IMG_2918.JPG

Just mess up a lot cause im pushing the boundaries, nothing is std, although the duplex timing chain is a std upgrade so should fit dont understand why it doesnt.

Im just not too sure it should be this tight, im gonna have to stretch the chain to get the bottom (really the top but the engine is upside down) pulley bolted on, that cant be right.

The tensioner for the triumphs chains is a small spring thing on the back of the timing cover.

funnily enough i have a pic

IMG_2911.JPG

Its sorted now new timing chain on the way, strangley there are two different chains sold under the same part number by the same company!! :O
Both are badged county TD62, one is made by a company called TYC (the one i have) the other is made by Rollon.
So rollon one is on order as i know they make good stuff, its so frustrating that the manufacturers of these parts cant be consistant.

Next up whilst waiting on the new timing chain, i've been having a dilema of the oil pump pickups, hmmm which one, both have merits....

And shucks steve you'll have me blushin!

the straight one which i prefer, surely the middle of the sump is best

IMG_2924.JPG

or the angled pickup which would be starved of oil under hard breaking? no?

IMG_2925.JPG

The straight one would ideally be a bit longer and a bit more angled to the middle and would be perfect.
Angled one, well yeah under acceleration the oil goes to the back but at the same aspect under heavy breaking, the pump would be starved of oil.

This is my sump before i cleaned it.

The straight one plonks right in the middle, angled one picks up from the rear. Im still inclined to go for straight.

Got the sump baffle finished, its not perfect but its the best i can managed, i've been through 5 of them.

IMG_2926.JPG

New timing chain is perfect.

IMG_2928.JPG

And the oil pump is bolted down

IMG_2929.JPG

Not really know what im doing just read lots and ask lots of questions. Im very good at remembering how things went together.

Cam timing is now set, couldnt believe how easy it is....

Find Top Dead center on piston 1
rotate the crank 103 degrees from that point
leave crank where it is
put the cam follower in and a pushrod
measure the highest lift on the cam by roating it
attach the chain to the crank where it is and the cam at its highest lift.

job done!

Youd think id learn to check parts people sell me by now given all the crap bits i have got! But yet again!!!

Picked up new fuel pump from chic doigs yesterday after having a long chat with ian him saying that with this pump i didnt need the spacer block and it was a direct fit. So i trust him and fit it!

Gues what it doesnt fit turn the engine over it bends the arm of the pump and puts a nice scratch in my new cam.

****** off is the understatement of the year.

you can see the difference in the levers.

IMG_2933.JPG

Right well cleaned it up put the timing cover on and replaced the cam and placed the cam followers in, once that was done headgasket is on.

some piccies...

Last photo included the newly painted inlet manifold with added take offs for the megajolt.

Well god that was an ordeal, its amazing how heavy the engine gets once everything is bolted to it, but its up next to the car at last.

Only one small foo pah this time, my cluts of a brother knocked the engine on a fence post and bent the back plate around the starter, but thats not a major deal, i'll unbolt it and straighten it tomorrow.

IMG_2956.JPG

Engine crane is only partialy assembled just to take the weight off the bent engine plate.

Just need to nip up to chics tomorrow have a chat with him about the fuel pump and pick up 11 sump bolts!! (how can i loose 11!!!) and a sump plug.

Taaaadaaaaaa

What a pain in the ass to get on the input shaft, definatly not a job to do on my own again, especially not with stitches in my leg doh!

Fairly stands out me thinks lol
