Yet another project....The uncrashed spitfire

Anyway,

I've been busy with my paintbrush painting the last few things.

Cylinder head has had a new colour put on it to match the engine, the red didnt quite go.

all the other bits on the engine are satin black, it looks soooo cool together, they are glossy just now but dry satin

Finally got my ass in gear and started doing stuff to get it back together for the final time.

Alloy bits on and tightened up. Rear crank seal on.

Back plates on and tightened down and the engine is back on the stand.

someone had a good point regarding sealing the front plate with paint on it, so i sanded it back to bare metal.

Not sure if anyone still reads this, but hey.

Just as things were going swimingly another problem part, the timing chain doesnt fit! doh! Yet another supplier is gonna get a rant tomorrow.

IMG_2918.JPG

Just mess up a lot cause im pushing the boundaries, nothing is std, although the duplex timing chain is a std upgrade so should fit dont understand why it doesnt.

Im just not too sure it should be this tight, im gonna have to stretch the chain to get the bottom (really the top but the engine is upside down) pulley bolted on, that cant be right.

Ah right, yes that sounds too tight to me. I take it there's no snail adjuster on that engine that takes up the slack then, crossflows have got a spring loaded tensioner on one side of the chain that takes up the slack and eventually takes up the wear and keeps the timing correct to a point. On my sidevalve it's a duplex chain with no tensioner like yours and it is tight but not so tight I can't get the bolts in the cam.

The tensioner for the triumphs chains is a small spring thing on the back of the timing cover.

funnily enough i have a pic

Its sorted now new timing chain on the way, strangley there are two different chains sold under the same part number by the same company!! :O
Both are badged county TD62, one is made by a company called TYC (the one i have) the other is made by Rollon.
So rollon one is on order as i know they make good stuff, its so frustrating that the manufacturers of these parts cant be consistant.

Next up whilst waiting on the new timing chain, i've been having a dilema of the oil pump pickups, hmmm which one, both have merits....

And shucks steve you'll have me blushin!

the straight one which i prefer, surely the middle of the sump is best

IMG_2924.JPG

or the angled pickup which would be starved of oil under hard breaking? no?

IMG_2925.JPG

The straight one would ideally be a bit longer and a bit more angled to the middle and would be perfect.
Angled one, well yeah under acceleration the oil goes to the back but at the same aspect under heavy breaking, the pump would be starved of oil.

Just from experience I get more oil pressure drops when braking because you brake a lot harder than you accelerate. That angled one is probably for a rear bowl sump if there's an option so make sure you use the right one for your sump.

This is my sump before i cleaned it.

The straight one plonks right in the middle, angled one picks up from the rear. Im still inclined to go for straight.

Sorry didn't make that very clear, if you use the wrong one the sump probably won't fit on - that's all :p

Got the sump baffle finished, its not perfect but its the best i can managed, i've been through 5 of them.

New timing chain is perfect.

And the oil pump is bolted down
