Yet another project....The uncrashed spitfire

Ha! Tard! It does help if you put all the bits back in doesn't it! How big exactly is the box of bits you took off but can't remember where from?

Pistons on rods, scratched one though, doh!!

and finally they are in:

unfortunatly they need to go back to the machine shop as they protrude the block by between 10-25 thou.

Well i've measured it now twice, just waiting for the shed to warm up and i'll check again.

So far the measurements have been exactly the same a few times.

1: 13 thou
2: 16 thou
3. 13 thou
4. 21 thou

Few more pics cause it looks so cool and shiny.

The question is do i get the pistons skimmed to the amounts measured or go a thou under for expansion? Hopefully take them to the shop tomorrow.

What's the thickness of the headgasket? One of the tricks on flatheads to get the compression up without spoiling flow and at the same time adding squelch was to have them protrude from the block to get it as close to the head as possible. I make that 0.4-0.5mm but I don't know what sort of tolerances they make pistons to. What did the engine builder say about it?

Pistons just dropped off, he said that he reaconed i could get away with it, being that my gasket is 40thou, problem is no 1 is 30 thou with the heat factored in, and if the engine were to be really hot that is just too much, so although i could probably get away with just no 1 skimmed im not gonna im gonna play safe and get them all done to be flush. Im probably a tad highly compressed anyway.

Apparently red top engines run with pistons cold 20 thou protruding, with a 40 thou gasket. Im too much of a wimp to do that.

But the guy felt sorry for me having to wait so long for his machines to be fixed last time and so is doing it all for free. should have them back for monday.

Well finally a nice day, and for the first time this year the covers come off the car.

Decided seeing as its a nice day i would sand the paint down and cut it in and polish it. Took me all day and my arms are completely gone, but it looks well tasty.

Sorry for the darkness the time got away from me to take decent pics.

*grumble grumble* I've been working on the boat this weekend so I've not done anything this week either!

By the looks of it your going to have an engine that goes before I've even started degreasing mine :( I've already got a fair stack of bolts of questionable origin. I'm a bit worried they've got mixed with a pile from an old bmw I used to have. I'm going to fail at reassembly.

I still can't quite get over how orange that engine is. Its so.....ORANGE!

nice colour to go with the rest of the car though.

Finally got my decent camera back from being repaired, and seeing as im unsurprisingly not in the mood for doing anything today being a condemed man for tomorrow thought id tidy it up. and take a few pics.

oooohh i like new toys???

how cool is the orange gonna look with the green though!!!

Im tempted to paint the wing cappings in orange too?

lol me! if you read back in the thread the car was sitting in bare metal coming up to winter so i had to do something to protect the new metal quick so it didnt rust, so i resprayed the car in 6 hours, no prep work at all jsut a light key. im quite good with the gun hence the rest of it came out ok but the bootlid really needed some prep. same with the drivers door. Its going in soon to be fixed by a pro.

And dont worry dingleberry, you now have 3 months to catch up as im going into hospital in 6 hours for major leg surgery, the final stages of rehabilitation after my accident a year ago.

Good luck! I'd forgotten about that. You did crash with some style as I remember. Make you you write on the good leg "not this one!!" and put on your bad foot "warranty void if removed". Just to avoid mixups ;)

I think the wing cappings in orange might be a bit far. You are going to need dark glasses to do any work on it as it is!

Well i got out 2 days ago after problems with surgery meaning i will have to go back in again, i do have some tasty scars from my hip to my knee now though. but hey.

Well im bored stupid of sitting about so put the pistons back in, now they have been skimmed.

Pistons now are all identical 10 thou protruding from the block which is about perfect.
