My friend has asked me to price/build a computer for him. His main requirements were that it had Vista on it and that he needed a decent size monitor for around £500, he said that he wouldnt be gaming right away on it as he has a PS3 but in the future he may plan to upgrade. So please take a look and if there is anything I should change then I would be greatful for any input.

Thanks in advance

hey, are you building a full new pc... because if so, you are missing a Power Supply. (read down:P)

other than that, it looks good to me.. it might be worth spending a couple of extra quid and getting a P35 motherboard, would upgrade better than that one... i think. If you wanted to go for the E2200 also, you could save on the RAM.. as you most probably wont see a benefit of having 4GB with that kind of system, and since he is gaming on a PS3 and buying a card that isnt really designed for gaming... I think £35 could be spent better elsewhere.:)

--Just noticed you have a PSU with that case, the case will be a squeeze though, am not sure everything will fit in there... the length of your video card may be a problem ..

Case Dimensions 42cm (H) x 20cm (W) x 42cm (D)

Power supply is included in the case so that base is covered. I put 4gb in as I wanted to future proof him and the prices at the moment are cheap. I was looking at the e2200 but I was thinking of giving the processor a mild overclock to get more performance out of it, will this Mobo and RAM be able to give this chip a decent overclock or would I have to change to a P35 chipset mobo?

4Gb of RAM in that system would not be a great way to future proof him, and i just checked up your motherboard QVL and Memory.. will quote this from the website below..

Also.. I am unsure of how the cpu would overclock on that set up, my knowledge of overclocking is limited, and never had experience with any of that hardware..

Motherboard + Memory info

1. 4 x 1.8V DDR2 DIMM sockets supporting up to 4 GB of system memory (Note 1)
2. Dual channel memory architecture
3. Support for DDR2 800/667 MHz memory modules (Note 2)

* Because of chipset limitations, do not populate both DIMM sockets of the same channel (e.g. DDRII1 and DDRII2), or populate 4 DIMM sockets with double-sided memory modules to prevent system's failure to start or incorrect detection of memory modules. Please refer to the user manual for the memory configurations table.

* Because of chipset limitations, when using FSB 1333 MHz CPU with populating all DIMM sockets, memory frequency will be reduced from the original, and system instability or incorrect detection of memory module may be occur. Please refer "Memory Support List" for memory support information.

(Note 1)Based on standard PC architecture, a certain amount of memory is reserved for system usage and therefore the actual memory size is less than the stated amount. For example, 4 GB of memory size will instead be shown as 3.xx GB during system startup.
(Note 2)Some memory configurations will result in memory frequency being reduced from the original frequency.

I think the problem noted on the first * will affect you.

I would definatly go for a P35 motheboard, and i think if you do, 2GB of RAM would see you through everything you want to do on a system of that specification... 4GB of PC6400 wont future proof by itself... the motherboard you selected is at its limit with that memory anyway, if it works correctly.

lose 2gb of RAM, he doesn't really need 4gb
for the cpu, get a 2200, as people have said, it is worth it.
throw in a cpu cooler, i recommend an arctic freezer 7 pro, this way you can get a nice OC going (it's not a difficult job ocing the 2XXX at all.)

Here is what i would recommend, and if you can afford it, maybe a standard size case + Seperate PSU (around 400w) for £30.

if he wants to upgrade in the future and game ( but dont expect crysis on high :P ).. all that would need is a better GPU.

I would agree with Games below - Vista home Premium is worth the extra £14

Thanks for all your replies I was meant to choose Vista Premium but must've selected Basic by accident. I will let him know that he may have to put up a bit more cash based on the recommendations you have given.

you should tell him to sell his ps3 and use his comp for gaming because a good comp should blow the ps3 and the 360 out the water.
