YNAB OCUKers & 2025 Budgeting!

Finally getting my head around this. I think it's a combination of the app only updating every now and then in the background, as well as my head being stuffed full of caffeine this morning.

Great fun so far. I think I've overcomplicated it something silly.

Had one or two restarts for the same reason, too general isn't helpful, not general enough is just as bad.

From a tracking and net worth point of view I've actually started to enjoy it, visibility wise it's an eye opener at times.

For me at least, it's caused way more of a shift in perception of 'value' be it monetary or otherwise in whatever is being spent on. Historically, I'd drop £200-300 a month eating out sometimes and wouldn't blink, flip side being I'd sweat a decision on buying other stuff for less that'd last years if not a lifetime

I've just started using this https://www.gethomebank.org/en/index.php to replace my aging, overly complicated spreadsheet. Simple to use, didn't take long to get things set up - will see how I prefer it. I only came across it since installing Kubuntu on my laptop, but looks like it's available on Windows and OS X too.

Other software that I've use before (Gnucash and some others) are just too complicated for their own good; think this one strikes a good balance for home use and doesn't look like garbage.

my budget is the same as last year... until the goverment uplifts the tax bracket, it will remain the same.
Yeah everything thing has gone up slightly in price, I have a watch loan finishing this year that will free up some cash and depending on work shares option price, I will double the amount for the next contract from £50 to £100.. or I might just buy another watch and pay it on tap.

So I have adhd and a lot of money issues. Is there a frictionless way to spend/create budgets/track spending/assign purchases to budgets and quickly check available funds in a specific budget e.g. check if we have enough money in the “days out” budget?

I tried Emma, but didn’t take to it. Ideally I want to spend using the tool either via card/Apple Pay.

Visiually appealing apps always please me

My wife has ADHD and she gets on great with YNAB there is some initial setup setting up the pots for bills, days out etc but once those are setup and you have YNAB linked to your bank account you can then start assigning transactions to budgets, it does a pretty good job of matching things automatically after you have done it the first time.

We rarely look at the bank app any more, other than to reconcile once a month, with IOS you can add widgets that show the balance of specified pots eg eating out, days out etc.

There is also plenty of graphs, reports you can do as well should you like that sort of thing.

There is plenty of YouTube guides on setting it up, how it works and also a pretty decent Reddit for YNAB.

Hope that helps

Really appreciate that, thanks.

Just tallied up all our CC debt and it's... well, a bit more than expected :D

Yesterday I got emailed another 34 days free so gonna give it another shot. I reckon once it's all set up and bedded in for a couple of months it'll be a lot easier, but getting to that point is a PITA.

I'm getting on quite well with Moneyhub after it was recommended in this thread. Love how it just brings all your accounts together (I have many credit cards), does a decent job of auto categorizing spending, allows budgets etc. I don't need a full budget but there are specific areas I want to track like eating out and holidays that easily get blown way out of proportion if not kept an eye on.

It’s actually quite easy in all honesty. When I set YNAB up I didn’t worry about categories until I added transactions as and when money was spent. You’ll soon rack up some categories and sub-categories through spending in the month and it’ll fill itself out. Then just budget accordingly when money comes in.

My own personal opinion but YNAB is the only way for me to properly know where our money is going and it’s quite eye opening.

I go through phases. I'll go for a few months burning through cash like it's confetti, then a few months being tighter than a duck's arse hole.

I just wish Dlockers was here to abuse me for paying for a spreadsheet :(
