You dont expect this down in Cornwall...

never seen any racism in cornwall in the time I've been here but as others have said, there are VERY few ethnic people here.

Born and bred in Cornwall, where I'm from you couldn't hope for a more welcoming and loving community, whatever colour you happen to be. I'm sure there are pockets of people who think differently but that's the same all over the country, on the whole I'm proud to be Cornish and confident the vast majority of people not only feel the same but share my beliefs too :)

Well said indeed.

It seems to be a 50/50 split as to whether or not its racist down here.

Its really interesting reading some of the replies. I wonder what promotes some people to say it is racist. What have you witnesed, heard etc..

I hope its not just the usual, Cornish demographic must be racist because there is very little ethnic minorities down here.

Small ethnic population = racist white population? I don't think so...

True story. Chinese person walks into a pub in some tiny Somerset village. I think most people there are more bemused than 'outraged'. I get a lot of stares (it turns out some of them have never seen a Chinese person before except on tv) but mostly everyone's pretty curious and friendly ;).

These sort of acts are unforgivable but i do say one thing:

These 'education centres' the pop up everywhere are Mosques in everything but name. And really should be clamped down on, there's one two doors down from me and they take the complete ****. Parking is a complete chaos and they pop up in places where there's hardly any Muslim community anyway. So it's a like car park round here on Fridays.

Its true, we dont have anything like that down here to my knowledge.. I must admit its the first time I have heard of anything of the sort.

Are they really 'popping up' everywhere? Surely there must be the muslim comunity to support them or there would be no point in opening?

Parking is always an issue anywhere you go really, be it in town or outside your house. You cant just point fingers at an education center, can you?

Dont get me wrong I am not starting an argument or disagreeing with you, just trying to understand really.

repeated racist abuse and burning his property down twice though might hint at " racist white population".....

only ever been to Cornwall on holiday, lovely place but yeah locals are more racist than the brown half of Manchester.

A friend of mine moved away from the rat race to a Cornish village years ago. There is one black person in the whole village, and to be honest, she is treated (in a non-condescending way) as a bit of a novelty and is certainly not ignored or discriminated against. She's welcomed everywhere she goes.

However, I've spent a fair bit of time down there and I can imagine that if there was a sudden influx of people who weren't "local", that the attitude towards outsiders would change. I mean, it took my mate 10 years to be accepted as a local and he's white!

Unfamiliarity maybe, but racism? I don't know, seems to me the city types get more practice.

TBH i was joking, people down in the south west are really friendly, theres a black woman where i work, she fits in just fine, never had anyone say anything to her since she lived here. its not actually that racist down here, most people are really friendly
