You wake up and there's £1904 in your PayPal account. What do you do?

How will they know OP address?

I know he said he was joking but in general. A google search on the email and see what it brings up as well as variations of the first part of the email.

Pop the email into social media and if linked to an account it can pop up.
Once you have social media you can figure out the general location of where they live, work, friends, maybe even a DOB and phone number.
Do an online phonebook search for the social media name

= address.

It's not as hard as you would think to track someone down. A few simple steps can really protect you online.

I'd personally buy a double pepperoni pizza with extra pepperoni.

Some might call it triple pepperoni, but i wouldn't. Not until I've done some calculations.

This happened just over two weeks ago - I woke up to a standard email from PayPal showing a gift payment as per above.

I emailed the address that had made the payment a couple of times with no reply whatsoever. PayPal said there was nothing suspicious on my account and there was no action they could take. I'm quite sure my account isn't compromised and neither is 1Password.

I just sat on the cash and effectively carried on using my PayPal account as though it wasn't there. I normally put a couple of hundred through it each month.

This morning when I opened the app, the additional £1904 has gone. My balance is back to how I'd expect. When I look at the account transactions, not only is there no transaction showing it was removed, the one showing the money going in has disappeared from the history.

So it really wasn't very exciting. I thought it would be interesting to see the GD opinions and thoughts of what one should or shouldn't do. You didn't disappoint, thank you :)

Ever wondered why someone in the accounts department is there one day and then magically disappears never to be seen again? This.

Sadly some people can't resist the temptation. We had someone awhile back who was dipping in the petty cash - kind of sad as they were well liked and earning enough it was chump change.

Demnons.

It could be that PayPal are funneling dirty money via your account, hence no history. Prepare for the security services to keep an eye on you and ambush you soon.

I suggest you sell all your gear on the MM at crazy prices and go into hiding.

Withdraw it, pay off a chunk of your credit card or invest it for some interest.

If someone legitimately claims it back, you benefit from the interest in the meantime. If nobody claims it, profit

So you probably should go down the 'this has caused distress route' claim that you rang all family members including those based abroad, you where forced to reach out to long lost friends etc to track down where the money had come from incurring many many costs and that your trust in the platform (as a trusted customer who uses paypal often) is damaged. They'll probably throw a few quid your way.

I think you did the sensible thing.

I know a guy who had thousands land (unexpectedly) in his bank account. He immediately spent it.

The bank then told him it was a mistake and demanded he repay the money. Which he was forced to do (in instalments).

PayPal could probably demand the money back as well if it was a mistake.
