Went to BMW today to look at a new car which I've agreed to buy on the basis that I can insure it for a reasonable sum. Rang NUD while I was there and they've put a stop to things and basically said we won't touch you on said car till you are 25 (I am 20) as it is Group 17.

I'm quite happy to ditch NUD now but I am up to 10 months into this years NCB with them and would like to take it elsewhere if possible so in two months time it rollsover to another years NCB. Second problem is finding someone who will charge a reasonable rate for a high performance car. I know the standard companies aren't that wonderful so will have to do some ringing round tomorrow of the specialists but can anybody recommend someone for me who may suit the job?

Tried Admiral/Bell/Elephant and they are asking for around £3.5k, the AA are also similar. Anyone who uses the Direct Line/Tesco/UK Insurance template won't do it over the net.

Ta :)

Well if you buy the car you'll have to ditch your 10 months of insurance and start all over and pay even more for a year.

Just wait 2 months mate.

Not got an older relative/friend who you can add as a named driver with bell/elephant? Should make a considerable difference to the quote.

That's what I'd advise, 2 months isn't long, and considering how much it couold save you.

Hi m8

Wait!

Don't ditch a years no claims when you have only got another 2 months to wait. As I think once you get your 1st year NCB its like 25% discount and even if you already have a year getting another one makes quite a difference to quotes.

Its only 2 months and its not as if your buying a rare car, there will be just as good examples available in 2 months.

However for insurance try A-Plan and MCE to see what they offer. Its probably a waste of time but maybe give the confused website a go.

What will be hurting your quotes the most is your annual mileage as the more you do the more you pay.

Not allowed as I'm the only one pretty much who drives it and I've added my parents as named drivers.

I can sympathise having been in the same position with my NCB and wanting to change insurer mid-way through the year.

Have you tried confused.com? This will at least yield some insurers who will insure you regardless of cost. You can then call those insurers and try to negotiate the price down a bit.

Edit: And yes, I'd wait the 2 months unless the car is a real bargain in which case I'd buy the car and park it off road until your current insurance is up.

Try Chris Knott, Greenlight, Noel Dazely.

Highway insurance are normally pretty good. I had my group 16 car (0y ncb) with them at 21 and it wasn't too extortionate :)

Just got a quote on a Group 20 Audi 4.2 S8 for 900 quid fully comp in my own name at 21.

just wait till your 21 and you will be fine. :)

Interesting - I'll give them another call tomorrow.

I found lots of insurers would accept me (under 25 by quite a margin) on a 530i but not a 330i. Some insurers seem to operate the over 21/25 policy on a vehicle by vehicle basis rather than being based on the insurance group or engine size.

It's all a complete lottery at the end of the day. All you can really do to get a reasonable quote on an expensive or fast car at a young age is waste a day compiling a list of and phoning every insurer you can find.

Need insurance by Wednesday if I am to buy the car.:)

Get on the phone to Bell and Admiral - they are the only people who would touch me in mine.......

I insured my TT at 19 with bell direct and i have just changed to admiral as renewal was cheaper - put your folks onto your policy as additional drivers too.

NUD were crap for me.

My car is ins group 18 too!

Barclays were cheapest for me this year, I'm 19.

I would never ditch 10months NCB though at my age, I need all the NCB I can get.

Maybe buy the car and get a parent to insure it for 2months.

By the Car.
Lock it up in the Garage with third party fire and theft for 2 months, Then insure it propperly and take it out of the garage and get driving :D

If you have to trade in your current car then just pick up a cheapy for the 2 months :)
