Young vs the old

It's also convenient for the powers that be that generations tend to blame each other rather than look at the cause of some these problems.

For example young people are jealous of the generous pension schemes some older people enjoy but its not their fault for taking out what was offered. Either the pension schemes were never costed properly or the companies that offered them now feel that a decent pension is no longer a priority. The older generation enjoying these pensions shouldn't rub it in the younger generations faces though as they will need to work a lot harder for the same reward.

Now you could argue that its the older generation that were / are in positions of power that caused these changes and in some cases that is correct. I guess they now have to hope that the younger generation coming in / now in power don't punish them and instead focus on making things better for all.

There's a reason that the phrase 'older and wiser' exists.

Young people tend to be idealistic, whereas older people (who were in turn idealistic in their youth) have by and large learnt from their experience and no longer try to achieve what they would like to happen and instead attempt to obtain the best possible likely result.

Now thats plain stupid talk!

joke.

Your own personal self esteem will dictate your judgment of someones intellectual abilities.

But most people are thick as two short planks, as I have I high self esteem. :p

Another huge issue is the drugs all the young lads take, either the green stuff or cocaine, and this epidemic is huge .....

I've noticed this recently with a lot of the younger temps - they sort of look down on alcohol and proud that they don't drink yet are doing weed by the bong full - not run into so many that are doing harder stuff but its definitely on an increase.

Any kind of work ethic seems to have gone out the window though weirdly you do get some that work really hard and not always the ones you expect.

Would you say there are differences in the generations when people are told they’re speaking nonsense? I know we have the good old triggered meme for the current generation but there’s a lot of stubborn oldies :D

Those oldies are called Victor Meldrew.

The character epitomised the archetypal grumpy old man.

This forum seems to have a disproportionate amount. :p

But are less willing to take risks and push forward. Those risks are the things that have progressed society over the millennia.

There’s a place in society for both (and other groups), it’s just a shame there’s so much bitterness. At least the young have the excuse that they don’t have the “experience and knowledge” of being old. The old have the experience of being young, so what’s their excuse for the attitude some of them display?

I'm 47 and i can tell you the young people of today are absolutely so stupid, it's scary. I'm in management and the amount of young agency workers i have to fire every week is unbelievable, they don't have a clue, show no respect and only want to stare into their mobile phones all shift. 2 examples of the youth of today I've had to fire are one lad for hammering a tube of lock-tight making the bottle explode which resulted in 2 operators opposite being rushed to the eye infirmary because it went into their eyes. When asked why he did it he said it was because he was bored. We have a no smoking policy on our site (only during breaks) and another lad kept opening fire doors and going out for a crafty fag. It's just a zombie mobile phone in hand generation that the schools are churning out. Another huge issue is the drugs all the young lads take, either the green stuff or cocaine, and this epidemic is huge .....

Is that a quote from Anon, 1765?

The world turns, the old complain about the youth of “today”.

"The children now love luxury. They have bad manners, contempt for
authority, they show disrespect to their elders.... They no longer
rise when elders enter the room. They contradict their parents,
chatter before company, gobble up dainties at the table, cross their
legs, and are tyrants over their teachers."

Attributed to Socrates by Plato, Just one of hundreds of quotes you can find over the last few millennia of the old complaining about the “youth” of their day (whether Ancient Greece, Rome, the 18th century or your grandparents day).

Nothing has really changed, just the reason to complain about the “youth of today” has.

That idiocy knows no age and most people believe that they know better than everyone else.

This, exactly.

There's nothing new in this. There are surviving references to it from at least as far back as ancient Greece.

Of course, it's easy for me to see this truth because I know better than everyone else :)

I think the change in view mostly comes from people obtaining capital - i.e. a house - and I'm not sure that this trend is going to continue with the current state of house prices.

Something I find interesting is the old/wise/experienced monikers given to older folks, when the vast majority of them I know (I'm 35) are naive and lack critical thinking. They lap up any old thing they are told, see on tv or read in the papers, without doing any sort of research or validation.

Yes, this can be attributed to all age groups, but if the older generation are supposed to be so savvy and wise, why don't they buck the trend?

There's a reason that the words "older" and "wiser" are, in fact, different words. Many people seem to miss this and somehow assume that older = wiser. See the quote in the post above yours for an example.

Listening to LBC this morning, it described the divide between the young and the old quite well, many of the older generation appear to believe the younger generation are stupid. Many of the younger generation think the older generation are stupid.

What is your experience?

Young people have always been and will always be stupid. They think they are all-knowing, invincible, and immune to illness. The old are stupid because they're out of touch and can't adapt to a changing society. The sweet spot is about 34. Hey, I'm 34! What a coincidence. I must be smart.
