Your clutch methods

Suppose it really does depend on the car you're driving.

My old Volvo disease-l had to have some gas before letting out the clutch or it would stall but my Supra will pull a hill start with no gas whatsoever!

Clutch in, 6,250rpm, sidestep clutch...

...Get ticket for public nuisance, driving without due care and attention and speeding, fit new clutch and planetary gears and continue...

I thought cars just "drove" magically when you sat in them and thought about going foward, much like walking. Mine seem to anyhow.

Do you walk along thinking "left foot forward, right foot forward" :/
Agreed :)

I think that even though most of us don't think about it at all, it's always Gas a fraction before clutch, it's just one smooth action

Speaking of this subject, I remeber a reply to the same question on another forum that made me chuckle..

DUH!!!!!

Clearly it's gas before clutch.. let me think..

Gas.. set revs to approx 4K... feed in clutch, modulate gas/clutch to keep forward traction with limited wheel spin.. full throttle insta-change(tm) into 2nd, same for third, look accross at competition, hurrah, my Saxo 1.1 has just kept up with some grandad in his 2.0 Mondeo to 50MPH even though he's not actually racing, and oblivious to my presence..

so am i strange that i do both at the same time?

I treat them like a seesaw, as one goes down the other comes up.

That makes me strange 2. I don't really think about it though I just do it.

but then I do like my car as it pulls away nice and quick (astra 1.8 16v sport) not that i condone anyone who speeds away from traffic lights (in a womens hands oooooooo the joy).

lol, in my naff little 1.2 corsa i can just slowly bring the clutch up and the thing then starts to pull off! No gas required.

I can do this in the Focus, but she doesn't like it....a lot of shuddering for a few seconds. It was easier to do in the Yaris; smaller engine, but less weight to haul.

gas, gas! since when did we become american. its called an accelerator.

i *think* i do them both at once. saxo 1.1.... yeah baby! feel the power

i updated my post a bit since the quote :p all i do is a bit of gas til bite then when the car starts to move foot of the clutch then more gas. i had a go in an empty road in the petrol fiesta before i started to learn and I kept bunnyhoping and stalling loads. then when i got the hang it was so much easier. however bad you are, with time you'll get better. just dont keep pulling off on the clutch as I bet you have an older car as a new driver and new clutches are several 100quid :)

Nah i have a Focus 1.6 02 :)

Depends a bit on the situation. If I start uphill I have to bring the clutch out a little before applying throttle, kind of hard if you don't have three feet :p (or use hand brake). Generally don't think about it. flying start *** :D

I believe instructors use 'gas' so they can say it a lot quicker (1 syllable compared to 5) when you are about to stall. "GAS! GIVE IT SOME GAS!" I guess it kinda sticks. :)

Give it a small amount of wellie (about 2200-2500rpm) and slowly lift the clutch. As it starts to bite, lift and accelerate together. D*mn turbos have no power off-boost.

Or..

5000rpm, sidestep clutch... :D

in first i can pull away with no gas, but has to be done slowly otherwise it stalls, normally 1krpm and lift clutch.

In my old polo I put the accelerator in first and lifted the clutch second, otherwise it stalled (although, in actuallity, in wasn't as 1-2 as that, I'd start lifting the clutch and then nudge the gas as it approached biting point). In my vRS it'll pull off without any revs, but I use them if I'm on a hill or want a faster pull away.
