Your current Fish tank Setups!

Or better yet, get the "big" jar (250g?) of Seachem Safe that will cost you ~£14 if you shop around, which is the super-concentrated form of Prime and will treat the equivalent amount of water for far less these days (since the Prime price hike ~2 years ago). ;)

Safe does not contain stabilizers that will keep it stable in liquid form thus having to mix it every time, for a small tank the dose will be very hard to get right not worth effort. In a large tank it would save money at best

Yeah, t's not worth the hassle of mixing up. An 8 quid 100ml bottle of Prime treats 1000 litres!

Say you change 60 litres a week, that's 17 weeks of treatment for £8. Might be a controversial thing to say, but if you're not prepared to spend £8 every 4 months on making the water safe, you shouldn't bother with a fish tank.

I tell you what else has impressed me, Seachem Stability.

Towards the end of a cycle, I was still showing ammoni and nitrites. I had been cycling for 6 weeks, so really had had enough. I did a 7 days course of that and that read 0/0/80, but the 80 was only nitrates from the cycling. A 80% water change got me down to 0/0/20.

Good stuff imo. Great if you want to cycle a tank faster. For example if you have impatient kids. Also would be a good sort of thing for the fella who wants to put a Betta in his 25l in case he loses some bacteria during the changeover.

I use Safe for each 12l and 30l container of fresh water I use on the ~50% weekly water changes I do to five tanks, I don't sit there with a milligram weighing scale for each dose, but I did use a scale the very first time I bought Safe to gauge the tiny quantity per bucket. I typically use ~1/8th of the measuring spoon per 12l bucket.

Safe and Prime both have quite large "overdose" tolerances (5x standard dose), which can be used to temporarily detoxify ammonia and nitrite for upto ~24 hours.

Copy and paste:p
Prime® is the complete and concentrated conditioner for both fresh and salt water. Prime® removes chlorine, chloramine and ammonia. Prime® converts ammonia into a safe, non-toxic form that is readily removed by the tank’s biofilter. Prime® may be used during tank cycling to alleviate ammonia/nitrite toxicity. Prime® detoxifies nitrite and nitrate, allowing the biofilter to more efficiently remove them. It will also detoxify any heavy metals found in the tap water at typical concentration levels. Prime® also promotes the production and regeneration of the natural slime coat.

Following your progress I would do a 100% W/C Just for the very 1st fill up, use a bucket of tap water 12L ofc use prime in it mix for 5 min, get that to temp, full 100% W/C arrange tank go get fish.
The only reason for the bucket method is the bacteria will immature and we don't wanna **** em off. W/c after I would still use tap to tank and long as there 1-30% changes

Surelymif I do a 100% water change it will need to recycle itself and create the bacteria and stuff again?

The beneficial bacteria are not primarily found "free-swimming" in the water, they attach to all surfaces in a tank (glass, bogwood, heater, plants, sand, gravel etc.) as well as the media in the filter.

Well i moved the guarami out of the tank after he decided to much on another guppies tale , he has been in another tank for nearly a week now. Someone was meant to be grabbing him the other night but never turned up....

Main tank is looking a bit bare so i grabbed 2 jumbo kuhlii's and another guppie today for it.

Crappy picure doesn't pick up the colour, lovely looking creature though. Meant to be shy but these don't seem to be.

Yup as UTmaniac said as guide 1-3% of bacteria will be in the water so next to nothing, 90+% will be in your sponges and or ceramics, the more mature the bacteria the less carful you can afford to be.
As you will be taking out harmful chemicals with prime in a bucket you will very minimal die off if any.

kuhli loach (Pangio kuhlii) are so cool, they really come alive in groups of 10+

Hi chaps,

So after moving house, I can't seem to stop my Fluval 206 from leaking. I've tried all the usual stuff like Vaseline on the seal etc. I can't be bothered with worrying about whether it's going to leak again as it seems to be a pretty common problem.

My question is, if I replace the filter with an Eheim one, can I just leave one of the old filter sponges in the tank for the bacteria? Obviously in an ideal world I'd run the new filter in for a few weeks but this isn't an option now.

Any advice appreciated.

Uh Oh......

At first i thought it was sand, i dont think it is anymore after seeing the other kuhlii. This one was has been swimming around the tank like a crazy mofo since i purchased it. The other kuhlii hides away...

Looks like i have purchased a fish with ich..... Great... It is now in the other tank...

Thats twice i have had problems with fish from this aquatics/reptile store....

Why not just use the Fluval media in the Eheim ?
Is there any bio media in the fluval or is it just sponges?
If it is just sponges stuff a couple in the eheim along with some bio media, then after a month take the fluval sponges out and replace them with ones that fit properly

I am also under the impression that no ehaim ships with media included, so you gonna have to buy that as well

Wharf ?

Damn!

One of my Lemon Tetra's committed hari kari. Must have jumped over when I was cleaning the tank. A lesson learnt.

Was a bit of a relief when I found him outside the tank. At least I know it wasn't bad water quality that killed him.
