Your current Fish tank Setups!

Alright fish bods.

My brother's birthday is coming up and apparently he's wanting to get a fish tank on the go, so he's asking for money for his birthday to get that underway. Any suggestions for something around the £20 mark that I could buy him rather than just giving him the cash? I've no idea what sort of fish he's aiming to keep, so I can't really give it much of a steer on that front.

Any ideas?

Cheers.

I'm after a sand for my gold fish tank, my fish keeper friend says Argos sell a 15kg bag of play sand that's fine just got to wash it loads, or is it worth paying over the odds for proper aquarium sand.

Currently have some horrible blue gravel but want a more natural look.

Normal aquarium sand is a pita and clouds
The tank for a few days. Cant imagine how bad play sand would be!

Don't use play sand unless you are only putting a really thin layer down of less than 1cm. Play sand is really soft and fine so it compacts down and you get anaerobic conditions, if the sand is then disturbed it releases toxic gas that can kill your tank. Don't get me wrong you can use it but it requires maintenance to keep it loose, goldfish will help with that but not solve it. I would steer clear and get something with a larger grain.

It doesn't have to be 'fish tank' sand, you just have to properly wash it first to get the dust off.

I have been looking at pool filter sand as well, i have read a larger grain is better so it quickly drops when disturbed. But whats considered large grain and where to get it.

I have found this one 0.8-1mm grain size.

10kg should be plenty so not too expensive.

I've been using play sand for the past 15 years without it killing the contents of my tank, just keep it to an inch max and make sure there's some bottom feeders, my Cory's love it. Also a gentle poke around plant roots with a chopstick at cleaning time doesn't hurt.

But that said a larger grain sand is less likely to blow around and if you've plants goldfish will lift them a lot easier from sand.

Here we go, much happier :)

Looks like it's gotten bigger as well, only problem is it's growing in the wrong direction! Was going to move it round slightly, but it's started attaching to the rock on the top and I don't want to just rip it off!!

Clowns have started getting territorial now lol, they attacked my hand when I put it in that corner to do some cleaning yesterday, too small to do any damage at the moment, but better keep an eye on the little burgers:p

Hi all. Today we got an Interpet 64L Fish pod from the Range. It is our first fish tank however my wife has had one before so we are just going to concentrate on cold water fish for now. We do have a heater that came with the tank incase we decide to venture into tropical later down the line.

Anyway. We are currently deciding on what gravel/sub to go for and what artificial plants are good. We are looking on Amazon and various other suppliers but they all have mixed reviews, pretty much on everything so it's putting us off going for something we like.

Anyone here point us in the direction of affordable fake but realistic plants plus maybe a center piece, like a nice log or stone/rock formation.

Nice to see it has improved! You were very proactive sorting out the problems you had, and I'd imagine you have learnt loads since you first started. It's a steep learning curve, but so rewarding when things go well.

Clownfish getting territorial is a sign that they are becoming a proper pair, you'll probably see the bigger female bullying the smaller male soon.

I can not for the life of me stop my current snail bloom.. Any tips?

I've tired the lettuce tip.. they fall off as soon as I move it.

Assuming you have the correct setup then Loaches! the zebra loaches we got made short work of our infestation and left quite the snail shell graveyard.

Else Assassin snails could work but your kinda just swapping one problem for another in that they also breed albeit a lot slower than pest snails.

We had a look at that site and was liking the fake plants there. We also found out they are stocked at Pets at Home (3 for 2) and The Range. We went down to both shops this morning and got our plants and center piece. Some gravel and other bits n bobs. Here it is all setup. Everything washed and what not. We are going to keep it empty of fish for a week just to make sure the water is ok. We used the recommended chemicals etc. I think we are going for 6 fish max, depending on what sort they are.
