Your current Fish tank Setups!

You're in Essex right? Where do you get your livestock from?
I mainly used H20aquatics for fish and AAC in Harlow for frags. Never got any diseases, just had the odd sudden unexplained death. And green Chromis killing each other.

I live in harlow just round the corner from there.

I go to amwell aquatics for my corals etc

Really glad you changed your mind!

Have you seen this guys tank?

I think it looks stunning. Rock anemones are a lot easier to keep than normal nems... And it looks OK with just one fish in. Mushrooms would look good too also!

I follow afew reefers on youtube, King of diy is a good one

I'm in a similar situation, in that that I smoke a few reefers while watching YouTube. Same thing, really.

If anybody finds that offensive, lay off. My best friend just died and I feel awful and humour is my coping mechanism.
Sorry to hear that mate. Id say smoking afew whilst watching anything is nice. But still

On topic though now
Nitrates are DROPPING. The **** is this black magic ?
Im now at 5ppm nitrates, Iv done a small water change before hand but this is so strange coming from tropical were nitrates are just a thing you add a lot of plants to deal with

So my skimmer, Yuck! Foaming like absolute crazy the past 3 days so much so it came out the breather holes in the top and left a nice gunk/smell. So we are sure thats working now which is good, Pulling out horrible green/brown muck though the consistency seems to change depending on how accurate the water level is in tank. After a day of evaporation and the water drops the slightest bit the skim gets a lot darker and not as tea like is this normal?
Brushed my rocks down today to rid the nasty build up of diatoms. Unsure if iv got dino's in the tank though i shall see if its re-appeared in the morning iv scrubbed it off more like a red slime with bubbles in but i suspect low flow caused it before i got a wave maker in the tank, lets hope i can indeed kill it off.

If you get any smell from the skimmer chuck a bag of carbon on the lid sorts any smells out, red slime with bubbles is cyano, i find using coral snow and zeobak works wonders :)

Cyano eh? Not dino?

Thank god (Maybe), cyano sounds more reasonable from the low flow were it is. How bad is cyano is marine compared to tropical?

Yeah had it few times, i used to much vibrant cleaner and this can cause cyano,if you catch it early and deal with it i don't think it's a problem, easy said than done keeping my nutriant levels in check though, i feed a lot due having Anthias fish, when you get the red sea 250 give me a shout if you need a decent net cover, i know someone who makes really nice ones although not cheap it does save the fish from carpet surfing.

Its the redsea 170 or the nano im looking at. Again not massive tanks but certainly bigger than what iv got!

Why am i not winning here, Im fearing its my source water at fault a little now which if it is ill be extremely ****** off as iv always trusted these guys.

Its confirmed its diatoms though, I brushed them off last night before bed and theyv'e regrown into this overnight in no light.
Im at a loss on what to do next really as im reluctant to add anything more incase ill need to nuke the tank.

6 weeks roughly. Ah im in it for the long haul then :D

6 weeks is nothing in a marine tank. I just had liverock in my first tank for the first 12 weeks. I either missed the initial ammonia spike or didn't have one as the liverock was only out of the water for 10 mins. Didn't want to take any chances lol.

Yep! We got the 5 discus for £80 which is an alright price. Their discus are a bit pricey to start with. The red Pigeon and red turq were £35 before discount for example. The yellow/red Marlboro were cheaper at £25 pre discount. And the Blue Diamond was £30 IIRC.

There was lots of marine being sold.

Think this weekend it's 25% off Corals and Plants. Unless I heard incorrect.

Hah, small world, I run the marine section at Truro!

Any of you guys run an ro unit at home? At what levels does it become worth it 4:1 unpumped would leave me at 200l of ro cost at 3 pounds. Buying it in barrels 200l of ro costs me 40 pounds. Obviously units cost and filters etc. Then salt costs add on too. Thinking for such a small unit it wouldn't be worth it but maybe for when I upgrade and I'm dumping 40l of water a month?

I did some basic math with the above. If 10kg of salt roughly makes 300l and 10kg is 20 pounds ish. 25 pounds per 300l of salt water vs 70 from lfs.
Price of a good ro unit I ain't sure of but ebay suggests 60?

It makes ro and salt water from lfs look quite expensive.

Even smaller when in Cornwall!

Just showed this to my partner and she said it’s probably Tom! :p

I’ll be that weirdo and say “OcUK?”.

Bought some Longfin lemon plec yesterday. Just got to grow them out in our smaller tanks before putting them in with the Discus.
