Your current Fish tank Setups!

Some awesome tanks in here!

We still have the Fluval Edge tank, one betta and 8 celestial pearl danios in it at the moment.

We did have 10 but they were digging up power lines in the street for weeks and the vibration cause the death of two and put the betta in some state. Thankfully he's recovered from that and is getting on with life again. Plants on the left are only recently added and needs a tidy up.

The 5 goldfish we had in a 60L bio-orb, 1 of ours and 4 we took them off someone who was going to flush them have been moved to more appropriate environments.

Two went to a friend who has a pond.

We bought a 126L tank for the remaining 3 but that ended up cracking and flooding the kitchen/taking one of the smaller black goldfish too.

Borrowed a 56L tank from a friend for the remaining 2 and have since got rid of the last of the fish we took in to the same pond. The fish we had is a fancy goldfish so not sure if he would deal with being outside in a pond or not.

Your goldfish need more space, dude. 30 gal minimum for 2 goldfish. For 3 you should probably be closer to forty. (US Gal). Your tank looks to be about 20 US Gal. And it's taller than wide. Not trying to be a jerk. I care about animals. I'm sure you do too. Not saying you don't. Having said that your goldfish need more space.

That tank is an Aqua One 620T, ~62x39x55cm water capacity IIRC the dimensions of my empty one, they hold ~130 litres. The overall height is ~72cm, but that top section is the overhead wet/dry filter in the hood.

While a tank that was longer and shallower would be better, given how most fish swim horizontally, the 620T volume is pretty decent for three goldfish.

I stopped using mine as a permanent tank because of the shape, my similar volume 120x30x37cm tank gives far more responsible choices of what fish to keep in it, plus the extra surface area makes it easier to keep the water suitably oxygenated.

Just wanted to check if this is normal:

We got a couple of new fish at the weekend (Banggai Cardinals), and while we were at the shop picked up a green candy cane as well.

Last night I noticed our toadstool leather was looking a bit droopy, the xenia was all closed up, and the edges of the candy cane heads were pulling back a bit.

I tested the water and the hardness was quite low - dropped from 8.6 on Sunday to 7.4 last night, so ~0.25/day, the calcium reading showed a similar drop.

Previously I had my dosing (using Salifert All-In-One in my top up water) at just the right point to maintain a level of ~8.6.

I increased the dosage and also added a couple of ml to the tank as well to bring the level back up, and everything perked up within a few minutes, so I'll keep an eye on it and make sure it's staying stable again.

I realise that obviously more coral = more carbonate/calcium/etc. used, but I'm surprised that 2 little candy cane heads have made that much of a difference?

Obligatory photos :):

Came down this morning and the tank was surrounded by a puddle, losing almost an inch of water overnight. :(

Unfortunately we live on a main road and have a speed bump outside our house, which sometimes shakes the house when lorries go over it too fast... Guessing that was the cause. Really annoying as I've only just got it how I want it, as well as it being fully planted, etc.

U may loose some to evaporation too don't forget but if u have a puddle it's a leak or it's escaping somewere

Where did it leak from?

If the glass cracked then the stand its on is not entirely flat. If it was a joint then it could have been for a multitude of reasons.

I’ve had a leak when not sealing my external filter properly, I’m so paranoid now I leave my 406 fluval in a basin under the tank. It was a 405 which leaked, even after changing the seal it still dribbled, I think the body must have swollen or something.

New friend (probably the last fish we're going to add unless we lose any)

Hyper little thing, loves playing hide and seek :p

Think we're finally winning the battle against the algae, getting far less growing around the tank, but still a few patches here and there it's still taking over (it's trying to smother the xenia :/)

Also since we lost our blue cheek goby, the sand is getting filthy again. Don't really want to get another one as from what I've read he possibly starved, so what would be the best replacement?

Possibly some more snails/hermits? We have 3 trochus and 2 cerith snails, so need a few more, and 3 red leg hermits, read a lot about sand sifting stars - but possibly needs a bigger tank, and fighting conches?

Get some copepods fired in tank, I put in 10 bags each month to keep the population up, I have a orange spotted Goby and he cleans the sand extremely well and a doesn't spill it all over the Corals like the blue cheeks do, I would get the pod numbers up first though.

We have loads of mysids, but not sure about pods, the LFS sells the bags of them so could easily add some.

I thought it was only the valenciennea gobies which keep the sand clean, the orange spot is one which pairs with a shrimp isn't it?

Aiptasia is getting out of hand a little and some came on new coral piece :/ So getting some redsea stuff for it or maybe a peppermint i aint sure yet.

Missed this post for some reason, I'd get a peppermint shrimp, ours is great, noticed a few aiptasia which must have come on a frag, and within a couple of days of putting him in they were all gone. The candy cane we added recently had a couple on it as well and they were gone within 24hrs :)

Yeah peppermint shrimps are great for dealing with aiptasia.

Lovely looking Lemonpeel Haggisman, the blue ring around the eye and on the ends of the fins is just stunning!!

Yup got one he's eaten the lot :D and he's a real character too. I'm having some algae issues due to new sand and a new chunk of rock with the upgrade. I put dry rock in so iv got a bit of phosphate leach right now. My zoas are happy as Larry but my green star polyp is very upset over it and won't open fully now.

I never wanted a perfect stunner tank I want to work for it and I like a good battle. Whilst iv still got no fish and working on my scape with a couple of corals etc i don't massively worry about phosphate or small traces of ammonia.

Can't have any shrimp in my tank now as i got a couple of rogue wrasses who cleaned out all my cleaner shrimps :(.

Bought a flame angel a couple of months ago and has not touched my corals(touch wood) i keep him well fed.

We ended up getting a strawberry conch, who is gradually making his way around the tank and cleaning up.

Has anyone used continuum refractometer liquid? Wondering about the accuracy, as i just got some and it looks like my refractometer was reading on the high side, so where i thought we were at 1.026sg, we're actually more like 1.023 and it appears the LFS has lowered their salt water to 1.021!

So, thinking about mixing our own, would a 20l fish tank with a small heater be a suitable mixing vessel? We have a spare one in the loft. Would we need a powerhead to mix it, or would a small internal filter do the job (with the filter media taken out obviously)

20L tank is so small, you are better off using buckets to mix the salt water and if you use a tank you will just have to pump or siphon it into buckets anyway. You might as well just use a 20L bucket.

Anything will be fine to mix it, just as long as it mixes it.

Kinda thankful my lfs makes my water infront of me. Its all RO off there storage system and they measure out salt and add it infront of you. My mixing method is very simple. Lay my barrel down in the boot and drive like a loon. Its mixed by the time i get home and i drop a heater into the barrel with my top up pump and wait :)
