Also, my kribs have bred again, they're so cute!

Going to look into a terrarium for terrapins later in the year.

Terrapins need a lot of cleaning- though technology may have moved on since I had them.

If you want a partial water/ land terrarium, something like fire bellied toads/ newts is easier to manage.

Fire bellied toads are so highly active, so are pretty good. They are active swimmers and call frequently. As toads go, they are quite cute.

Fire bellied newts are another easy option. They do well in a tank with fire bellied toads. They're also pretty active.

I had a tank with both in for years, and it required close to zero maintenance.

Went round to do a water test on a family members tank, so, once again, I'm looking at fish websites and dreaming.
Dreaming stopped when I saw the prices.
One website was selling basic xenia for £20 for a *tiny* piece!

When I had pulsing xenia, I treated it like a god damn weed! I ripped it out by the fist full and traded to the fish shop for food.
I couldn't stop the stuff from spreading, was even on the glass and sand.

I'm looking at various makes/sizes for a tank to go on a desk.
I don't have a set budget as such, but I don't see the point of spending for the sake of it,
as this is meant to slowly reintroduce me into fish keeping after quite a long hiatus away from the hobby.

I have a couple of models in mind: the Aqua One Aqua Inspire 55 litre,
and the other is the Superfish (Qubiq or Scapper) range... something north of 50 litres,
so I have at least some sort of degree of freedom in terms of livestock.

Does anyone have opinions on these? Any other suggestions based on personal experience?

Thanks.

Fortunately the guy who will look after our reef aquarium will also look after the proposed terrapin aquarium. I’ve found another £5k and space for a 1.5m tank, so I’m curious what he can come up with. This would be much later in the year though.

Those all sound like great options too.

Hopefully the protein skimmer will arrive this week and then the live rock etc is getting added next week I think.

Brief update on the final guppy, still alive, doing well - she gave birth so now has something between 12-15 smaller guppies swimming around, difficult to get an accurate count as they're so quick :D

Oh, we have a snail in the tank, must have hitch hiked on the plants I bought.

Following my first tank back last July im now on tank number 4 (multiple tank syndrome is a thing!) last one set up is a 40gallon mbuna tank, really entertaining behaviour from those guys. Only have 8 fish in there at the mo just letting the filter get used to the load before i add more, not even sure what the limit would be for that size tank, i read with mbuna you want to overstock to quell agression. So far agression isnt an issue but i assume thats because theres plenty of space for them. Ideally id get another 8 but ill see how big these guys get first.

Think we’re probably looking at these for our second tank:

One of the few options that offers a basking area plus cabinet underneath.

The next phase was finished today, after carrying 250L of water up many stairs.

There are already some bristle worms appearing out of the live rock. Protein skimmer needs adjusting. Rock has been cycled already, so aiming to get the first fish in there next week.

The shopping list for the next stage currently sits at:
2 clown Fish (pair)
1 fire Fish
5 hermit crabs
3 cleaner shrimp
3 snails (add later)
Brittle starfish (add later)
1 Royal grammar
1 dwarf angel

6 corals:
Hammer coral
Zoas
Mushrooms
Duncan coral
Xenia
Red tip bubble anemone

I would not put xenia in the tank it will take over the whole tank like a weed, zoas just try and keep them on a island some species again can overun the tank.
welcome to the brisstle worm club.

nuke it from orbit now or you’ll be stuck with them for life.

They are asexual or what ever the term is for having male and female sex organs. Basically they can need with themselves.
Got back off holiday and we now have 3 snails - also a bunch of patches of eggs around the tank. Will scrape them all off when I do a water change at the weekend. Don't mind a few but don't want them taking over the tank.

Babies are all doing well, the big female looks pregnant again though :o

They will take over the tank. Pest snails need to be immediately nipped in the bud or you’ll be forever removing them.

Edit: welcome to guppies.
