Your current Fish tank Setups!

I am on the verge of setting up my first marine tank, Fluval Roma 240. Really excited about this! Anyone else put a large tank upstairs in their bedroom?

Will be fine.

I have a 190l in the corner (first floor) in a 15th century barn. So, yours will be fine :)

If you want to be extra carefull, put it across the floor beams, rather than along them. But to be honest, for a tank of that size, its not an issue.

Search the net, if you can find 1 story of a tank going through a roof, I will give you an E-cookie :D

Fish in cycle is fine, provided you keep an eye on the levels with a test kit daily and do daily 50% water changes at least.
That way you will be able to have fish in sooner, and usually the cycle is a lot quicker :)

If you can get a good amount of "seeded filter media" (dirty spongey stuff) from someone else's filter to lob in your new filter, you will speed it up even more. (as little as 2-3 days!) You can usually find people local to you on a forum that will be willing to help out.

Maidenhead Aquatics almost always have Shrimp in. In fact, I don't think I have ever visited a branch that has not had multiple varieties available.

On a related note, I just added a sump tank to my main tank, using a PVC overflow pipe and a small pump to return. Its quite a slow flow, but I might add a powerflow and try to make it into a moving bed. Should increase the biological filtration capacity nicely :)

Have you drilled a hole in the return pipe just below the water surface to break the syphon in the event of a power failure?

Nope, I have made a water-level overflow, not a straight syphon, so it does not need one, when the water level drops below the intake, the flow ceases. The Sump has enough volume to take the full amount above the intake :)

what do you mean when you say brackish ? re: glass fish. As I recently got a glass fish in my tropical tank and it seems happy enough.

Also, my friend came over the other day with some baby fish she had grown/raised for me. Put them in my tank and within 3 hours 2 had become live food for my angel fish. God they are savages.

Brackish water is slightly salty. A lot of brackish fish are "tolerant" of pur fresh-water but survive best in a saltier environment.

Angels are predatory fish, they will eat anything that they can fit in their mouths. Its the same for most fish when it comes to tropical. If it will fit in the mouth, eventually, it will go in there!

Just set the heater to a temp lower than the tank is already at, that way, it will not come on unless the temp drops. Perhaps also look at fish that are happier in warmer temps.

Although danios are fairly hardy, and would probably be ok even in an un-cycled tank for a while, but eventually they will get ill under the stress of dealing with the poor conditions. Regular water changes will help keep the ammonia levels down until the filter has matured sufficiently to cope with the bio-load (waste).

However, bear in mind that danios actually prefer cooler water! I would not want to keep them much above 25 really.

Gourami's and other labarynth fish might be better suited to the warmer temps.

It was unpopulated but had been treated with with the bacterial culture and the stuff that kickstarts the filter.

This changes nothing, what were they testing for?

There would be no ammonia, no nitrates, or nitrites (unless they were already present in your water supply) as there was nothing to provide them. So, any water sample would come up rosy. In fact, too rosy. Anyone with any knowledge would expect to see 0 ammonia, 0 nitrite, low ppm trace of nitrate to prove a cycled tank.

Don't get me wrong, I am not one of these people who thinks everyone should fishless cycle, but you need to know that currently that tank will be in the beginnings of a fish-in cycle. So you will need a test kit, and at least daily water changes of significant volume (50% is probably a good starting point) untill you get readings like the above.

you would need a temperature activated thermostat opening a loop in the water cooling before the radiator so when the tank dropped below a certain temp it opened and closed once a max was reached You would also need a backup heater for when the pc was not on though. So it might be a bit of a faff...

Quick Question, anyone here in the Surrey area able to rehome a xenomystus nigri (African Brown Knifefish) Its about 5 inches long. Currently fed on Frozen foods, but will take flake if offered.

http://www.seriouslyfish.com/profile.php?genus=Xenomystus&species=nigri&id=303

I have two in my tank, and the smaller has been getting beaten up a bit since adding some convicts, the larger is able to hold his own.

If someone has a tank large enough to house it, and is willing to take it on and collect there would be no charge :)

It's a small 19 liter / 5 Gallon tank and it will hold two goldfish.

Please no. Make it into a small tropical tank. 2 goldfish would need nearer 100 gallons to be happy.

Filter wise, you could get a submerged canister filter, they are pretty silent, and dampened by thew water. Otherwise, look at a closed loop external, they are more expensive, but generally quite quiet, provided the return is low enough in the water.

I would say, look at some Geophagus species, and a sand substrate. Watching them dig around, turn over the sand and move it about is great fun. It also ensures the sand is always clean :)
Plants can be an issue with them, as they will uproot them, but i have a few floating fake plants moving around in the tank.
Although, looking at the size of the tank, you might not be able to have more than a single pair, which can cause issues, as I found a single female got bullied too much, and ended up with a single male which saw the agression drop massively.
I do like my convict cichlids, which breed like rabbits, and can be a nice experience watching them breed.
The fry can also provide a natural food source for other larger fish.
My fave two fish in my tank are the following:
Polypterus Sengalus - Really fun to watch grow up, and sort of act like a puppy :P
Xenomystus nigri - Awesome to see how this fish moves through the tank..

anyone running a moving bed filter?

I created a small one from a lucasade bottle air pump/air stone and k1 media. It looks awesome and algea production is lower than previously so I could run the main lights for longer each day :)

FAMAS, why not run a sump on that tank? That setup looks perfect for it! Get it drilled now before you fill it and do it properly!

I had to create a diy overflow for my sump, wish I had drilled it when it was new!
