Becuase frankly its damn good fun. I only just average over 30mpg on this particular 150mile trip which I'm sure will come as a suprise to many of you who think you can know everything about somebody from what they say on the internet. I don't drive like a grandad, thorougly enjoy the performance my car offers and wouldnt want anything slower.

Except...

Motorway journeys. This is where I am able to eek out amazing mpg from my car and I'll explain why. It starts with a simple premise.

Driving on the Motorway is a fundamentally boring task. You sit, and drive straight. Sometimes you move out to go past someone. Sometimes you steer around a slight corner. Thats pretty much it. There is no real excitement to be had on the Motorway.

With this in mind, I set the cruise to 70, pick something good on the stereo and sit back in complete comfort whilst acheiving excellent fuel economy. Whats the point in anything else? If you do 80-90 you are constantly slowing down then nailing the throttle again as people pull into and out of the outside lane, you risk attracting the attention of the police and it never makes much difference to the journey time.

You won't, however, find me acheiving 40mpg from my car if I need to travel on the M5 late at night, although I don't bother with 3 figure speeds becuase I rather enjoy my license.

You only drive like a grandad because if you drawn any amount of attention to yourself then you'd get pulled over due to some early 20 year old driving quite a nice car which he surely cannot afford :p

Oh yeah, Fox was always up in court for speeding when he had his Xantia and Mondeo, a right boy racer. The 530 is what calmed him down.

There's no reason to hit the rev limiter though is there, peak power is not anywhere near the limiter and you'd be shifting up a gear much earlier than the limiter anyway to keep in line with this :/

Obviously all cars are different and the only way to know accurate shift range is after an RR run...but even still it would not be near the limiter.

Spose some folk just like to hear their engines and backboxes bark ;p
