Not really a fan of hot but a fan if tasty. Lamb tikka masala, lamb tikka dupiaza oh and balti international in derby do an amazing balti tandoori mix!
My standard curry is a chicken madras if I'm visiting a curry house/takeaway for the first time as it usually gives a fairly good baseline on what else they do as it's fairly simple but should be pretty hot.
Lamb dhansak and whatever naan takes my fancy on the night. It is the curry I always get at a restaurant I have not been to before. It is a good benchmark to see if they are any good. If it is good, I will go back and try something else.
Chicken Tikka Bombay*. Quite a mild dish (I do like hot stuff too), but I add hot sides to spice it up. So Chilli Pilau Rice and a Chilli & Coriander Naan.
*Meat of choice, Potatoes (ala Bombay Pot) and a Boiled Egg (halved) in a medium curry sauce (not balti). Find this with the above sides to be a great mixture of flavours and textures. I'm sure if you wanted it hot you could, just ask for madras hot or whatever.
Murgh Bakhar-Wala which I can only seem to find in a place in Belfast, tomato sort of sauce, red and green chillies makes it very hot, sweet and a assort of thick sauce. Greatest curry of all time.
Do like a good Madras, pathia, Balti and dhansak though...
Got to have a little rice, peshwaree naan and some saagaloo with it all!
My new favourite is a special from my local takeway: Bass tikka bhuna... my goodness it was the nicest curry I’ve ever had (and we have some award winning restaurants locally so had some quality meals).
