Do you visit restaurants often?

If so how often do you go and do you have any particular favourites or favourite type of restaurants?

I enjoy trying out different restaurants. My wife and I normally go as and when we can.. We paid a visit to a few local ones recently.

LochFyne, was okay for a franchise..

The Alma

My favourite was the Waterfront Place, Chelmsford.. decent food and wine. Great surroundings and the table was yours until you were ready to leave.. Then they converted to a children's play area??

I'm not too keen on paying extortionately over priced celeb style restaurants and I've never been fortunate to try any Michelin Star Restaurants. You?

Decent Italian is still my favourite..

Have you been to Mustard in Chelmsford? Next to the old Alders store, lovely food. I enjoy the Alma too.

Going further afield the Old Siege House in Colchester is nice.

The Waterfront has gone downhill massively.

Things have changed so much in the UK that I'll go virtually anywhere and have a great enjoyable meal. In fact what would make me want to go somewhere is smply not having been there for a while - so I guess that kind of goes against the favourites thing... :)

I would go to a celebrity restaurant - someone opened one in Glasgow recently (Jamie Oliver?), but I'd rather go somewhere else first. I'd be expecting to pay through the nose.

I like going to casual dining restaurants:

Wagamamas is my favourite followed by Nandos and GBK.

Sometimes I'll splash out at higher end restaurants but this is rare.

The Three Chimneys, Isle of Skye

Mother India, Glasgow (for very different reasons to the above)

This place in Auckland is pretty good too.

Went to an an amazing place in Singapore and I can't for the life of me remember what it was. Grrr.

No I haven't tried that.. Never heard it..

Chelmfordorian ? Where abouts in Chelmsford are you?

Le Fleur de Sel - Cannes

Taberna de la Bovida - Palma de Mallorca

Peter Lugers Steak House - NYC

Restaurant Lasserre - Paris

As for more casual eating in London, I love Feng Sushi, Ping Pong, Rules, Olleys Fish & Chips!, Dollar Grills and Martinis, Blue Elephant and it's sister restaurant La Porte des Indes, Chez Manny, Lorenzo's. Lots really - a few chains there too so not all pretentious expensive foods.

Try it, they do "Great british Dining" the have lots of special nights such as I think tonight is Wiskey tasting, regular pie and fish nights. The rest of the time its food (and some of the drink) sourced locally.

They also have a tiny bar down stairs where they some times have live music and stuff.

Live in Colchester now, but used to go to St John Payne, and, if I go out on a night out it's in chelmsford as that's where the majority of my friends live. Would like to move to Chelmsford so costs so much more than Colchester (rental prices)

Local

Hart's, World Service and Iberico , all in Nottingham

Further away

Ma Tring's Boathouse, Phuket
Alex, Las Vegas
Del Friscos , Las Vegas
Rosemary's Las Vegas
Michaels , Las Vegas
Docks Oyster House , Atlantic City NJ
Butterfly Thai , Amsterdam
V Zatisi, Prague

1 to avoid, Jean Georges in NY, Michelin 3* crap

Will try that thanks :)

It has got stupidly expensive, mainly due to commuting. They way things are going, Colchester may not be too far behind as people move further out. :(

I'll bear that in mind when I'm next passing :D

Whilst I enjoy food I can't say I've been to a ridiculous number of restaurants so don't have too many to choose from. My favourite in recent memory though is Maison Bleu in Bury St Edmunds - reasonably priced for the quality of the food, took my mum there for her birthday. :) http://www.maisonbleue.co.uk/

Ooh, as a French person, do you subscribe to the view that French people are reported to have... that British food is bad?

Not really, a lot of British food has now become rather a gastronomic delight. I would say the "average" pub/cafe food is very average, but not offensive or poor. However, as you head towards the better restaurants the food begins to excel. Certainly the number of michelin stars and accolades British chefs are attaining is clear to see. In fact so much so that a lot of British chefs now work in France alongside their Gallic counterparts.

I think British food is definitely on the way up. Don't be fooled into thinking that all cafes in France offer fabulous food, there are many times I've had extremely disappointing meals in France. However, I will say this, that on average basic cafes/bistros in France offer better quality foods than the average British pub/cafe.

It's hard to be totally unbiased as I adore French cuisine - so I potentially enjoy French cooking in France a little bit more - but that's also undoubtedly owing to the fact that I love being in France!

I think in this day and age Britain's international reputation (or at least perception, mainly by tourists) as a food backwater is rather undeserved.

I think in the UK it is still too easy for places to serve bad food and still survive, but it is dwindling in number as people are becoming more savvy.

In Coulsdon there is La Scarpetta. An Italian with great food and service and we like it a lot. We also like Smiths of Smithfield in London. Again, great food and service. Food can be either reasonable (£35-40) each for 3 courses+drink or expensive (£80+ per person) depending on what floor you go to. But the food is incredible on the expensive floor.
