Ok, so I normally do this on Dec 31st but as I am off to Canada until the New Year soon I will do it now. As with previous years I will keep a running tally.

Please Note : The rules I use for this causes complaints whenever I do this, so I will state at the start here that these are the rules that I use myself when I am weighing up the years games to pick which game was my game of the year. Theres nothing to stop someone doing an alternative poll which doesnt use these rules, these are simply the rules that I use. As with previous years, if you feel that no PC game that you played this year is worthy of being your game of the year, it is allowed to say No Game/Nothing

Here are the rules :

#1 - Absolutely NO multiple game choices, ONE game, ONE game only...NO top 3's , no joint GOTY, no "honourable mentions" - ONE SINGLE GAME.

#2 - Must have been FULL released between Jan 1st 2022 and Dec 31st 2022 (which means that yes, a game which was in Early Access pre-2022 but got its FULL release this year, IS allowed)

#3 - No titles still in Early Access

#4 - No DLCs - must be a main game release

#5 - Must be a PC game - Duh :)
GO !

23 - Elden Ring
18 - No Game/Nothing
10 - God of War
5 - Dying Light 2
3 - Return to Monkey Island
3 - Grounded
3 - Vampire Survivors
3 - CoD Modern Warfare 2
2 - Warhammer Chaos Gate Daemonhunters
1 - Trek to Yomi
1 - F1 2022
1 - Uncharted
1 - Stray
1 - Sifu
1 - Sniper Elite 5
1 - Isonzo
1 - Dorfromantik
1 - TMNT Shredders Revenge
1 - High on Life
1 - Cult of the Lamb

No Game/Nothing

Yeah, I can't actually think of many games I've played released this year which I've actually enjoyed. Elden Ring was OK (probably the best game I played) but didn't really grab me though I might go back to it when I have time off. Feels like 2022 was the year where the pandemic really hit game development and resulted in much poorer output. The ongoing supply issues and extortionate pricing of GPUs and other parts kept me away from PC gaming as well. Thought I'd enjoy the new COD: Warzone 2 but it feels like a map expansion pack rather than a new game so I grew board of it pretty quickly.

Fortunately next year is looking like it'll be better with Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom , Fire Emblem Engage , Stalker 2, Starfield, etc.
Hopefully PSVR 2 and potentially a new Quest headset will help bring VR in to the mainstream and make it more affordable and better supported.

So yeah, 2022 was a gaming write-off for me but hoping for better things next year!

No worries, will add one to that tally. Its been a curious year for games for sure and I think the final list of games will reflect that. Last year in the end there were something like 20+ different titles in the list of peoples chosen game of the year but I think this year we will see a much smaller list of "standout" titles.

Dying Light 2 for me.

The story was meh and it's saddled with Denuvo but those aside it felt like a really well put together PC game with some excellent RT features for those that could take advantage of it (and it ran really well even on lower-end RTX cards). I spent a lot of time exploring and doing side quests and it's the only game this year that I've actually played through a second time. Techland have continued to support it with updates and free (and paid) content and it's really the kind of release I wish we had more of this year - not in terms of gameplay (although I enjoyed it a lot) but polish - it's one of those rare games where the PC version feels like it's had a lot of love from the devs.

And yeah - I played Elden Ring too but great as it is, it's not a great *PC* game.

MSFS thanks to updates and third party study level planes (e.g. Fenix)

Edit: realised I've already broken the rules!
