Your highest *average* speed?

Nothing exciting in my driving really so here's a good quote from Lonman from M5board.com (ex gumball entrant etc)

I spent the weekend on the boat down on the south coast

It was on the way back that I noticed something very strange. We left Torquay at 0600 (my previous record to the M25 (London perimeter motorway) was 1hr48mins. I noticed that there was an unusually large amount of fast bikes around. ( I found out today there was a Superbike race day at one of the south of England tracks)

So anyway we were going for the record of 1hr48mins when in the distance I noticed a bike moving fast, we were doing 130mph and not really pulling in the ground. We (my girlfriend and I) sped up to flat out, limited it was showing 175mph on the speedo (is this normal?) Eventually we caught up with this guy, he was on a FireBlade, he gave us the thumbs up, and proceeded to try to disappear. No word of a lie we raced him for 90-100 miles down the M4, never going less that 150mph. Our top top end was a few mph faster than him and he was going 100% ( I know this because a man who goes through the middle of two cars at 150mph+!! will always redline it!!) During our race we must have pasted 20-30 big sports bikes, some of which pulled straight into the fast lane to join in, but didnt have the balls to stay. Actually thinking about it although they tried to speed up and catch us, none of them got within 200 metres. The guy eventually went a different way at the M25, but before he went he gave us a big, big thumbs up.What a race. You know what, he was the moral victor. **** you should have seen him leaning round the corners at 170mph+ and braking hard behind some slower traffic, back wheel wobbleing, there were times I was scared for him....very, very scared. Obviously there was pretty much no traffic on the roads at that time + it was a Sunday.

Three things that were discovered on the trip:

The M5 will pull a superbike at 120mph + ( fact)

Driven hard you get 140 miles out of a 2001 M5's tank

It's possible to do London - Torquay in 1hr25mins. I won't even try to break that one.

Speed = distance/time

As sung by Adam & Joe.

Awesome song awesome show  I used to get that in my head all the time back in the days of GCSE science :/

Edit: Argh what was his name? Roscoe H something or other :( All I remember is that he liked to go a long way in a short time :o

My house in Walsall to my house in Salford, Its exactly 90 miles and I did it in 57 minutes in my old ka!

Proud of that? Seriously, take a look at the 'speeding in sheds' thread and stop being so reckless. Honestly, that sort of speed in towncar?

Hahahah, nah i just think that those speeds on a motorway, let alone a u.k one, can't be held for that distance..

Pinch of salt and all. :o

Just outside Glasgow to Carlisle in 1 hour, didnt realise Id gone so quick on the A74 in places but very little traffic, nice day and just kept going.
Lucky not to get caught and have been a lot more concious of my speeds on the m-ways on my own since then.

The guy in the M5, like austinpowers I'm pretty doubtful. Even at 6am, I don't think he could sustain that sort of speed. Which he would need to do to make that sort of progress.

I don't see why not, have any of you guys driven the M5 at night? Virtually deserted.

All it takes to sustain 150mph early in the morning on rural Motorways is lots of bottle and a complete disregard for the law.

Google videos for Lonman and you'll realise it's totally possible ;)

Maybe so, but I mean travelling that sort of distance without coming across the law or somebody randomly pulling out (which its unlikely you could anticiplate or react to at that speed)...its doubtful.

He must be crazy either way.

At around 7 in the morning, that would mean nothing in your way..Period.

Plus he said 140 out of a tank,it's over 200 miles to his destination..

Maybe its just me but i thought M5's had a top speed of 155mph or is his derestricted? If it was then maybe its believable (looking at the google link maybe it is) as a fireblade will do way more than 155!

Plymouth to Coventry, an hour rest, then Coventry to Plymouth. 240 miles each way, both journies took almost exactly three hours (even with a major diversion on the way back). In a 1.1 litre Peugeot 205 as well.

Also Rosyth to Cambridge (about 440 miles) in 6.5 hours in a laden Sherpa van.
