Your home server & Network

What model's that mate? (been looking at the DS410j). I too have had QNAP/Netgear NAS's in the past and I currently have a self built server but I'm now looking for something smaller with 4 bays. Want to be able to use nzb and torrent software though. Not too bothered about RAID as I currently do a weekly backup of my stuff on an external drive which I assume I'd be able to do with a synology. One of the main reasons I'm thinking of changing again in the electricity usage in using a server.

Looks like a 409 or 409+

I've had a 409 for a while now, great bit of kit, just upgraded it to DM3.0 and its performing even better!

Use it for all my media, plus shared storage and even iSCSI LUN for my VMWare images :)

1gb of ddr2 ram
AMD athlon 64 4200+
some foxconn motherboard
Arctic Power 500w
Akasa 860SF
3TB

Running unraid as the O/S, 2TB of space and 1TB for parity drive of course. Working out really good so far.

This is the DS410. Was going to buy the DS410j but the DS410 has much better read + write speeds. Pricy bit of kit though!

After some searching I thought it was that model. Bit too expensive for what I want and I've now bought a Netgear NV+. Just a pain putting all my data back into the shares now!

Just added some new kit to my little home setup so here's a pic:

maxsize-900

I bought a pair of WTI NPS-230 8 port network power switches from eBay for the princely sum of £38. I believe they retailed for $600 each in 2002, so a nice bargain I think. Telnet access only but I've just written a web interface to make things a little easier. Doing a nice job so far :)

The kit:

NETGEAR ProSafe FS726T smart switch
NETGEAR ProSafe FVS338 VPN firewall/router
NETGEAR ProSafe WG102 802.11g wireless AP
2x WTI NPS-230 network power switches
Virgin Media 50mb cable modem
Hayes 56k dial-up modem for failover

The server is an old development workstation from the office, so it's a bit of a mongrel now:

P4 3 GHz
2Gb ram
Several hard drives, ~2Tb
NETGEAR GA311 gigabit adapter

The plan is to get a ~24u rack and do everything a bit more proper, so to speak, when I move out. Patch panel, one of those nice slide out monitor/keyboard jobbies, KVM, rack mount case for that server and the other one I've got planned (8Tb+ ideally)... all that jazz :)

Just out of curiosity, how does your server and kit in the loft cope with the cold, dense and moist winter months, and the boiling loft heat in the summer?

Yeah clearly it's not an ideal environment with such wide fluctuations in temperature etc, but I've not noticed any problems and it's been in this configuration for several years now. It's fairly well insulated up there but it wouldn't surprise me if air temperature right now is around 10c, and it feels like it's well over 30c in the summer!

With enough cooling I would attempt at doing the same, the only thing that has always played on my mind though is condensation and moisture. I need to stick my server and network kit somewhere as its not great in my room as the noise is a little annoying now and all this electrical equipment is giving me tinnitus (whiney ear syndrome) :( and I got no where else to plonk it without annoying someone else.

Tomorrow I will be building a new WHS with

i3 540
4GB Corsair DDR3 1600MHZ
Asus P7H55-M/USB3 mobo
5x 2TB HDD

Its an upgrade from a

Pentuim Dual core e5400
2GB DDR 2 6400
Asus G45 MOBO
5x 2TB HDD

The upgrade cost me £40 after shifting the old kit. The older system was fine and the upgrade was not really needed but someone was after a cheap PC build and figured a bit of effort would get me improved performance, power usage especially when idle and HT. Oh and USB 3 if I decide to add some external disk etc.. in the future. I was also running out of sata ports and the new mobo has 8 over the 6 I already have plus 2 x PCI-e 2.0 slots or sata controllers or nic cards etc..

Will be a PITA building again and transferring the data but eh!

My Home Network

Server ( Currently )

AMD Phenom 9550
Gigabyte MA78G-DS3H
4x2GB Geil
C: = 80GB Seagate
D: = 320GB Seagate
E: = 2x1.5TB Samsung ( Striped )
F: = 120GB WD

I have Win2003 x64 Server here and I was wanting to use that to do network install for my LAN but never got round to it since Im upping everything to Win7 anyway.

I have a possibility of getting hold of Server 2008 x64 with 5 CALS for a great price, but its a lot of money for something taht for me will purely be a show off point to myself, so... I think a thread quesition must be asked about that.

The Server is Vista becase I have spares and since SP2 Vista has proven capable and for me, its just fine as a file server.

I also use an app called SECOND COPY to make backups of all my network PCs

Does it nice enough for my needs.

Oddly enough, just had my electricity bill, £67 for the last two months.

Only running the one old desktop-server as my NAS these days though.

better than it used to be - £70+ /month.

Bloody hell. My Electricity is £40 a week give or take a quid or two

Saying that, I have both my server and my main PC both running 4 FAH Clients 24/7

I have a NAS box that I really should use that instead of a whole PC and forget about FAH on the server, but its simply too slow.

I will I think splash out on a completely new NAS box, or just use a lesser specced PC... Hell, for my needs, a ZX80 will probably be good enough.

This thread is truly terrible.....

Every time I see it I want to go out and buy a second hand HP Proliant from t'bay or two or three......

Get the keys to my new apartment in a couple of weeks, then the renovation inc cat6 cabling and small rack, then I will put up some pics, hopefully for sanity's sake, without 3+ sec-hand Proliants in it :D.

How can you use that much electricity? £40 a week is about what it would cost me me leave a three bar electric fire on 24x7!

I've got a PowerEdge SC440 and a Precision T3400 running 24x7. I've then got my main PC on for 16+ hours per day, plus the Wife's PC for 6+ hours per day.

There's then lighting, cooking, central heating, etc. and my total spend for Gas and Electricity for a 3 bed detached house is only about £21 per week!

Pics will be along shortly but my server is:

Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise.
Q6600
8GB Ram
2x 34gb Raptors RAID1
2x 2tb WD greens RAID1 (Media and backups)
2x 250gb RAID 1 (Hyper-v OS's)
1x 1tb external drive to backup os.

This server is set with speedstep and anything else to make it green as its on 24/7.

Server runs 2 Hyper-v boxes also, one 2008 webserver and one WHS server mapped to the 2tb drives. I have a Windows server 2008 Standard waiting if needed.
