Your home server & Network

why filezilla and vnc if i remember unless you pay or set up certificates there not secured ?

500 watt ocz module psu (yes overkill but im planning some folding eventually)
amd 939 3000 1.8 - currently running at 1 ghz
abit an8 motherboard
xfx nvidia gforce 7200
Via raid controller - (its puny tbh i got it so it can tide me over till my next big upgrade)
3 x WD 1tb barracuda
1 x Hitatchi 1TB deskstar
1 x Seagate 80gb ide - boot drive
1 x Maxtor 160gb sata

Running WHS - itunes server and contemplating sticking tversity purely for iplayer on demand as well as youtube vids, flickr's..... etc

got a 1 tb external and a 500 external which im using for backups

network consists of

netgear 8 port 10/100 business line switch
Linksys WRT54g running Tomato - opendns
Belkin Router of sorts - made into a sole purpose modem (getting replaced soon enough)
Linksys Wireless Access point

waiting on some new ariels (12db) and still need to setup the access point upstairs but apart from that ...its all set up :)

I used to run Windows Server 2003 at home for learning purposes, got rid of the kit though, looking at this thread makes me want to start back up again, I think I could use a server at the moment to be honest. :)

I already have a case, PSU and some optical drives, just need the rest :)

Networking includes

Netgear DG834GT With DGTeam firmware
SonicWall TZ150 Firewall

Currently got a little K45 Shuttle with an E1600 (2ghz), 2GB DDR with a 1TB WD Green (system and shares) and a 320GB Seagate (backup), running Windows Home Server. I am tempted to put 2008R2 on there though, as I hardly bother using the WHS features. The only thing I'd miss would be the IIS certificate :/

Low power consumption and a small footprint were my aims, and the K45 fits the bill nicely.

I'm quite low on the server front compared with how I have been in the past. Currently just have:

Fileserver/Database/Web
E2180
2GB
1x 250GB
2x 1TB (mirrored)

DNS/DHCP/Database/Web
K45 Shuttle
E2180
2GB
1x 500GB

QNAP 209 II NAS
2x 500GB

Both servers run Linux and both, along with the NAS, are getting rather full at the moment. Biggest problem though is that currently I can't run my normal offsite backups as my parents are moving at the moment and are between houses and we're got rid of the servers which were at their place.
Still once, they've moved then they'll be replaced :)

I used to have multiple athlon based servers but I don't need quite so much running all the time any more (which has done my electricity bill a lot of good.

Some nice setups here, I'm not sure how where I'm going with my server setup at the moment at the moment I'm setup with

Netgear 8 port 10/100 switch.
AMD Phenom @ 2.3GHz
1.9 TB storage (non raid - mainly SATA drives)
ATI 9800GT 1GB (for CUDA accelerated development work)
Running Linux

It's not really meeting my needs, too slow on the storage front, and I've never been able to properly configure it to WoL.

Meh :/

Wanting to improve it to a Phenom II @ 3.2GHz
2 X SSDs in RAID 0
4x1TB SATA drives for back up storage / media files
8 port 10/100/1000 router

Wow my network consists of 4TB NAS (Qnap 439), 16gigabit managed switch, router. Then standalone machines.

I use to have a big beefy server but its pointless now i have a qnap nas, 1gb ram, 1ghz atom cpu and 4 x1tb disks. I can serv multimedia, connect to cctv, etc and all this under 50W

dg834 v4 (dgteam)

some of you are really running overkill setups,

the trick to homesevers is to keep the tdp low

Using it in a live environment regardless of how small it is, is much more beneficial than just using vmware on a workstation.... imo.

Have to agree :)

If you saw Bill Gates' setup would you call that overkill? ;) And what's TDP? Google couldn't tell me, did you mean TCO (Total Cost of Ownership)?

I like your setup with the Atom, what's load like when carrying out large file transfers? I'm thinking of getting an Atom based machine for running FreeNas (adding to the overkill :D).

@wonko: Love the mini comms cabinet :)

Most of you have probably already seen these, but these guys have us beat - now that's overkill! :D

Good grief! Fantastic setups but wouldn't like to pay their electricity bills.

Is anyone else sad enough to have any naming themes going for their network hardware? Mine are space/scifi-related, for no obvious reason. The server is tardis (bigger on the inside), PCs are neptune, earth, jupiter, magrathea (from hitchhikers guide) etc., the adsl router is io (er, because it does I/O).

I spend a lot of time on [H] and some peoples setups on there are serious, most rival the majority of my clients!

But these are guys that make a living from these setups. As such these are really there Office systems, that just happen to be located in the home.

Building a network/server to run a company on is always going to go way over what is used for personal use.

I am putting the final touches to my own setup in the home

3 x VMWare/Xen Servers
Xeon L5520
12Gb of RAM
1 x WD500GP
6 Network Interfaces

Running a Check Point / Microsoft environment on Xen / VMWare

2 x OpenFiler Servers
1st
Core2Quad Q6600
8gb of RAM
1 x WD500GP OS
Adaptec 5405 x 2
8 x WD500-RE-GP VM
1 x WD500GP ISO Store
3 x Network Interfaces

2nd
Core2Quad Q6600
8Gb RAM
1 x WD500GP OS
3Ware 9650SE-12
12 x WD500-RE-GP VM
3 x Network Interfaces

Storage for VM Machines

Mgmt PC
Q6600
8Gb RAM
3 x 250Gb HD
Will run VM of Management Clients on different Windows OS
XP, Vista, 7, 2K3, 2K8

Desktop PC
Q6600
8Gb RAM
3 x 250Gb HD
Will run User Desktops in VM, ie XP, Vista, 7

All connected via 2 HP1800G-24 SMART Switches.

As such 7 machines for my learning which will be located in my home. However of none of it relates to my Home, and is purely for developing professionally. Is only switched on intermittently.

However I consider my Home Network as

Media Server
Apple Mac Mini (awaiting time space to upgrade to 10.6)
4Gb RAM
320gb Disk
FW800 Attached to DroboPro fitted with 4 x 1Tb WD Green Power Disks, for media storage
ElgatoTV and iTunes

late Model 2008 MBPro on 10.6

1Tb Dual Band Apple Time Capsule

AppleTV via Wireless.

EFI-X Gigabyte i7 920 Mac Pro Clone
10.5 OS Used for editing and Hand Brake of DVD Collection.

Deciding on either build a new Windows 7 Games PC, or buy a Mac Pro to replace the EFI-X system and convert that to Windows 7 Machine.

what's TDP?
Thermal Design Power. Basically how much power the processor consumes. The benefit of an Atom based system is that in theory it uses a lot less power than a traditional server. Some of the setups in here are amazing and I am jealous, but the leccy bills must be staggering.

I haven't seen any issues with my Atom based server, I seem to be more limited by the physical speed of the green drives. No problems streaming high-def content, copying files etc. Don't expect it to be particularly fast in doing complex tasks such as encoding though.

thats good think Ill pop over to that on my next upgrade !!!

Yup, they are IcyDock ones. Difficult to get now, OcUK dont sell them no more . . . .

They are 2 5in3 bays and 1 3 in 2. All that runs off a single Antec Earthwatts 380W PSU. And my UPS (Newly bought, the cheapy from OcUK) says its only using 132W.

just seen the price of those cage's.....OMG

Just as fair warning, the problem with Atom is that Intel has tried its hardest to lock down what chipsets and configurations the boards have, so don't expect to find an Atom coupled with 6 PCI Express slots and 10 SATA ports!

I went for the Point of View Atom 330 board in the end, its expensive and a little overkill in the graphics department, but it does have four SATA ports and a PCI Express port for expansion. There are Atom server boards out there, but they are for non-enthusiast uses such as industry or retail, so good luck finding one :D

that would hinder adding a big ass raid controller too it..... its not for at least a year so im fine until then hopefully somthing will come out ... maybe ion will go mainstream ?
