Well I was just feeling proud after making my network just right, and I wondered "what do other people have and what do they use it for?". So basically thats what I am after. The computers yuo have on your netwrok, what you use them for and what you would like to add. (With ofcourse no reference to what certain media might be)

My Layout:

Main pc:
For games, work, general use.
Laptop:
For work away from home, or watching films while gaming on main :p
File server:
Obviously for storing all media on it and streaming to other computers.
Cache:
Leaving on 24/7 so anything anyone wants to send to me can be stored while the fileserver is off, also a nice buffer so I can check stuff before moving it somewhere else.

I can VNC or FTP between file and cache pcs and the others.

lol, I'm not a hermit. I just have a lot of stuff. and its all hand-me-downs from peeps who dont use their old puters any more

My PC - everything.
same. Although I have my flatmate's laptop for when I break my PC. And a cupboard with Hard drives in it for file storage.

it seems like you have a 4th PC (which is on 24/7) purely so that you can turn off your 3rd PC.

Ah let me explain that. the 3rd pc is a beefy huge cased noisy fileserver. The 4th one, my cache pc, is a silent mini-itx machine that uses up about 30W and doesnt keep me awake at night :)

iMac, iBook, PC, laptop. All connected via wireless but the last two aren't mine.

My Layout:

Main pc:
Windows XP. For games.
Flatmate's pc:
Windows XP. For everything
Laptop:
Ubuntu Linux: For work away from home, or watching films
File server:
Debian Linux: Very stable. Obviously for storing all media on it and streaming to other computers.
MySQL server and torrentbox
Compaq Proliant with Debian
Internet Gateway and print server
Debian Linux

I can VNC or FTP between them all, and have a compaq rackmount KVM for a couple of them[/QUOTE]

that how i read it too

Same.

I'm bored so might as well.

Main PC. On when I get up. off when I go to bed.
Contains shared drives E and F. All media is stored on here for other PC's to get on LAN. Contains HTTP and FTP server for getting files when away. VNC connection is also set up so I can access PC on the LAN, and when needed the port is opened externally.

Second PC. Used by my brother when i tell him to get off mine. :p Doesn't contain any helpful software apart from VNC viewer.

Laptop. Used by my Dad for VPN to work with. The rest is same as above.

MP3 player. Contains Samba to access files wirelessly. Used when I am too lazy to connect up a USB cable. Also has VNC viewer to remote desktop my PC.

I would like to get a server for use 24/7 to move all the server operations from my main PC to it. Mine is too loud, bright and power hungry to have on all the time.

I would like to get a gigabit switch and add another wireless access point to the other side of the house to get decent coverage in the garden.

ok my setup

pc in sig i use all the time although its only turned on while im suing it..
amd turion laptop sit upstairs doing nothing unless im on the way to england then i use it for playing brood war or c&c v the wife on the ferry.. also used as an mp3 player when in the car.
wifes pc is in the bedroom has not been turned on since i put my old parts in it and windows was installed
the bairns pc is used about as much as mine just for games ect..

Laptop for everything. Does all I need it to do. Might get a bit frivolous and buy a small portable laptop drive that needs no power for extra storage.

Can't be arsed having computers for different things, I always end up getting annoyed at moving files over the network and no doubt don't bring what I need when I take the lappy out cos im lazy.

Main PC : Dual-boot XP and Vista for everything, inc a couple of Ubuntu virtual machines.
2nd PC : For when Main PC blows a fuse.

The server is the only thing that's on 24/7. Well, only computer anyway. The switch, wireless AP and modem are on always too. I also use the server for downloading stuff from usenet using HellaNZB / HelloHella, and any other download that may take more than a day. But all the storage is in my main PC with only a 36gb WD Raptor in the server.

-Laptop IBM T60- Windows XP & soon Arch Linux... Purely work.

-Home PC- Ubuntu- Let's be honest mainly just 'media'

-Shared NAS drive- backup of work laptop and some movies/ music

-Soon to have 1GHz Gentoo box running Apache and acting as a VPN client so I can get to personal business files/ other stuff & control downloads etc whilst I am away on business

-Sun Sparc Ultra 60 running Solaris 8 and a load of software developed by my company (This lives under a bench in our pool changing room WELL away from me as its extremely noisy!!)

-My 2 sisters computers, my mums, and brother's computer all distributed around the house running XP (Bleugh)

Yeah I probably need to spend less time with computers :p
