Your Home Setup

I have a pretty old PC as my main one: Athlon XP 3200+, 512mb RAM, nVidia 5900 Ultra 256mb, 60gb + 40gb HHD, running XP Pro and Fedora Core 6.

Also have a PowerBook G4 15" and an Acer C302XMi Tablet PC connected, and an XBOX, PS2, Wii, PSP and DS Lite connected via wireless.

Network consists of a Linksys WAP54G access point, Cisco 2924XL switch, Cisco 2621 router, and a Virgin Media modem.

I have:

Main PC
Dual 2.8s

File Server
1.5Tb of media!

Everything-else Server
Quad Xeons, babeh!

Media PC
Exactly what it says on the tin!

WRT54G router, Netgear FS750T2 50 port switch, Linksys 8-port gigabit switch.

Feeds about 12 PCs, multiple VLANS, about 15 subnets

Oh and I can turn a lot of this into a 45GHz OpenMOSIX cluster thanks to TFTP and PXE netbooting :D

This is only the portion of the network that I actually own, the whole thing is vastly more complex :)

My PC (in Sig) used for gaming, listening to music, browsing.

Networked to

Wife's PC: P4 3.0GHz, 2GB RAM, X1950 Pro. Used for her design work and gaming.

HP Tablet PC: 2.4GHz Centrino (I think), 1.5GB RAM. Connected to the other 2 over Wireless. Used for Design work and browsing in bed or on the sofa :)

Both main machines have the same 19" HP LCD monitors and share a HP colour printer and 5MB cable connection. We have a nice L-shape office desk so it all looks pretty sleek.

We also used to have an old Duron system as a media server and network backup box. However, in the interests of athsetics......and the fact it never really got used for media.....I scrapped it and just got an external HD enclosure for the wife's PC to backup her work.

Main PC = what I use
GF's laptop = what she uses, or me if I'm in the lounge
Spare PC = sits on the floor of the office getting tripped over

I probably ought to set up the spare PC for something useful (like a download box) to stop my main PC drives getting so fragmented. As it stands my general Windows performance is really appalling compared to my work PC. Although being on a wireless rather than wired network would make transfers a pain.

my laptop, rarely leaves the desk though, and almost never gets turned off. No wasting electricity with pointless multiple servers here. I do have a server box set up but it was only used as a testing base for my uni project, not turned it on in some time, laptop is much quieter and more energy efficient.

Main box (WinXP) - Web browsing, film watching, gaming, etc.

Server (Win2k3 R2) - Exchange 2003, VMWARE
- VM Citrix Server (Win2k3 R2) - Citrix
- Numerous other test servers (SQL, Sharepoint, etc)

Macbook - Web browsing / film watching wirelessly around the house.

IBM Thinkpad (WinXP, Ubuntu) - Work/Study laptop

Linksys WAP

All behind a PIX 501 firewall

Also...

Networking test lab
3x Cisco 2503 Routers
1x Cisco 2620 Router
2x Cisco 2950 Switches
2x Cisco 1900 Switches
1x Cisco 2521 - Frame relay cloud
1x Cisco 2511- Terminal Server
1xISDN simulator
1xNetscreen 5GT
1xTest Server (Old box with Win2k3/Ubuntu, just for testing)

My setup:

My pc. Used for pretty much everything. I'm the only one that uses it because everyone else is scared of it:confused:.

Dad's lappy. Mainly used for surfing the web by my dad and my sis.

Mums pc. Used for all her work stuff.

Mine and dads are wireless, mums isn't online yet cos dad forgot the password to the router and mum doesn't like cables all over the place:o.

My Setup,

Main PC (Mine)
Used for gaming xeon x3210, 4gb ram, 2 x 74gb raptors in raid 0, 8800gts and a dell 24" 2407.

Laptop (Mine)
HP Dv6190eu dual core turion, 2gb ram, 120gb hdd and a dab tv tuner, runs vista hp.

Laptop (Other halfs)
HP DV5000 Sempron, 1gb ram, 100gb hdd, running xp pro.

Server (Mine)
IBM Netvista mobo, P4 2.66ghz, 1gb ram, 4 x 250gb hdds 2 in raid 0 other 2 as backup drives. This is just networked, no keyboard or mouse. Just use rd to connect to it, been playing with MS Home Server on it, now going to try Server 2007 beta on it.

All connect wired (laptops also when on their desks) via gb switch

My main PC for the usual stuff and a Windows MCE 2005 PVR in a Shuttle SB75G2 system. Got rid of my Mini-ITX server as I realised I didn't need it. Will probably get rid of the PVR too for a cheap and chearful DVD player.

I have a Shuttle PC for everyday surfin' and tasks. This was top spec about 6 years ago. I have a gaming PC which was top spec about 5 years ago, but I can't afford to upgrade it. I have a PC with RAID 5 running Open SUSE 10 for backup of mp3's, photos etc. When I was living at home with my folks, this baby used to stay on all the time. Now I'm in my own house, paying my own bills, this one only comes on for backups.

I also have a Linksys NSLU2 which runs Debian and is attached to a USB 320GB HDD which runs Samba so everyone can share files. This stays on 24/7 as it only uses a thimble of electricity. I also host a website from it.

For some waste of resources reason, I have 3 wireless access points connected via WDS to a 3Com firewall router which work didn't want anymore and then out to Virgin Cable @ 4Mbps. I have one connected to Shuttle, Gaming, Suse and Linksys. My Gf's (Yes I have a girlfriend) Shuttle is connected to another access point as I had salvaged one and it gives a better signal than the card I had and the 3rd one is downstairs connected to the firewall.

Main PC - net, games, films in bedroom
HTPC - films in lounge

New set up to follow soon as moving into own flat w the gf.

Print/File/Network Server (hopefully also web/sql server)
Switch
Main PC
Testing Rig
Wireless
HTPC
Laptop

Main PC - Gaming / Net surfing / etc etc

2nd PC - sat awaiting a new Hard drive so i can get it up and running and join to my main with a KVM switch

3rd + 4th PC's - are downstairs set up with a Microboards DX-2 printer/burner for my dads CDs and various music software for doing all his tracks (He's a country singer by proffession). These 2 are also set on a KVM switch.

All four are (or will be when 2nd PC is working) networked wirelessly

Got a couple of Wii's on the network too (tho one of those may be sold tomorrow hopefully)

Mac Mini:
Everything I do. Quark, Photoshop, browsing, etc.

Mum and Dad's Dell:
Everything they do. So.. er.. email.

That's it. I'm going to pile all my spare drives in an old box and use it for a server, but that's really it.
